The Abyss is one that will definitely be a must have for me. Upgrade from VHS...

Superb news, been waiting for Aliens to appear on Blu-ray for 2 years now.

The Abyss has recently received its first ever anamorphic widescreen dvd release on Region 6 in China.
Despite their history of bootlegging it is apparently an official release from Fox.
You should be able to find it on ebay - however IIRC the above news on Aliens also has mention of a Blu release for The Abyss next year.
As ever the UK version will be cut and as a Fox release the US Blu will likely be coded so if you want to get The Abyss uncut on Blu you should either pay for a multiregion player or be prepared to buy from Europe who should also get an uncut version.
However when Fox released the Bond film Casino Royale on Blu all of Europe got lumbered with the UK censored version on the films first Blu release

Maybe that is why it's been delayed from the rumoured 2009 to next year.
Yeah, that's all it is (45 seconRAB was cut according to Imdb, but alternate shots were inserted into the film so that it makes sense). Quite frankly, i'm not bothered if they cut that out, it's not like it damages the film in any significant way...

I'm not so sure about that , apparently ThunderbirRAB tv series on Blu-Ray was issued in 16:9 , they cropped it's proper 4:3 ratio so that it would fill widescreen tvs .

I'd buy them all on BR......
Although, haven't they said that the LOTR releases will be the theatrical versions? Great, so we can pay for those in the full knowledge that it's only a matter of time before the extended editions are probably released.
