I'm coming out of a leased VW Passat with 25K over-mileage (professional sales...). Went to a Toyota dealership to look at a Pre-owned 4Runner. I cannot turn leased Passat in because I would get hit with about a $.25 per mile over-mileage fee ($6K+). My only other option would be to buy it out or have a dealership or private party buy it from VW credit.
I accidentally slipped and divulged my over-mileage situation and right away, salesman says, "No problem, we can take care of car for you and also break up your over-mileage amount of $6K owed into payment of your new, pre-owned vehicle through us; this way you wont have to worry about it and can wash your hands of it." Clouded by many thoughts, I said--"Sounds like an option!" I realized afterward though, something didn't sound right; he did his calculations of my over-mileage based on me saying $.25 through VW and that I have 25K miles over...wouldn't he want to know exact amount if it really was necessary for the over-mileage to be paid? I could have told him they would charge my $.12 per mile over and he still was determined to do his calculations and slip that number into my new finance amount...hmm...what an easy way to make an extra few thousand dollars!!! Am I wrong here!?
I am concerned because VW Credit told me that if the lien on the Passat is paid for in whole to them, that over-mileage won't apply. The VW Credit Customer Rep told me that over-mileage has to do with the dealership's terms at beginning of lease because if I were to bring it back to them, they now have to turn around and sell it obviously and don't want to get short end of the stick from what original lease terms were.
No matter what, I am in a tough situation! I love the truck my wife and I drove today and by them slipping in the over-mileage fee, technically owed to the VW dealership, in reality, and now instead I am paying them, it is making the monthly payments for the truck very difficult to think about paying. I personally believe that they are trying to scam me.
The second question I have is, when he came over, he said the asking price for truck was $26,800 and that they would do it for $24,800. I didn't even start to negotiate them down, but I am trying to figure out a solid number to throw out there to start with...$23,500??? or do I just say, "Hey listen, the amount for the truck isn't working for me, go back to your manger and work up some new numbers for me?
Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you so much!
