Alltel/Verizon question?

I used to be with Alltel, until they switched to Verizon. I went to the website and wanted to add a line. It says I have to upgrade my phone first. What I am wondering is this. If I upgrade to new phones, how will this affect my contract that was originally with Alltel. Will my contract be started over with the upgrading of the phones? I see there are some phones for free, but really are they free?
On the verizon site they are offering buy (free) one blackberry get the second one free. This is with a two year contract, of which I am already 1 year into from my contract with Alltel.
 
It's asking you to upgrade your phone because now that you're on Verizon, you cannot add a line under an Alltel plan anymore- your lines must be moved over to Verizon plans to add a line. All phone prices on the website are with a contract renewal, which you can only do if you're eligible to upgrade. Usually you have to complete your contract before you can upgrade, but I would call customer service or go into a Verizon store and see if they have any special deals for former Alltel customers who are changing to Verizon.
