Alltel contract expired one year ago, turned phone on today, I had full bars.?

This is a MOTOROLA Razor. This phone use to show no service so why would it be showing service now? I dialed my home phone and got an operator telling me to call a specific number. Is there a way to keep this phone from roaming. I would like my child to be able to take pictures and video's of a field trip.
 
Just follow these steps to turn on airplane mode (turn off the phone function):


Press Menu (The [–] button), highlight Settings (Figure 1) and press Select.
Scroll down to Airplane Mode (Figure 2) and press Select.
If you want the phone to ask you if you want to turn on Airplane Mode when you turn the phone on, choose Prompt At Power Up (Figure 3), select On and press Change.
Highlight Airplane Mode (Figure 4) and press Change. Then choose on
