Alltel cancelling my data card...mis-directed anger??

Alltel called me this am and advised they are cancelling my data card as of 06/22. I roam off of VZW. Is this my fault? I live outside of Albany GA-the one market down here that did not go VZW. I understand I have unlimited data, again not my fault. Should I be angry at Alltel-the messenger? Or VZW who they say is not going to continue to allow me to roam with unlimited data? They are giving me one month's credit plus not charging me an ETF (how generous since this is not my doing!)

My choices are so limited! I kept the $10 tethering feature on my BB. TG!

Mowtow??CClay??

This is really the second phase of High Roamer disconnects....surprised you didn't get flagged for the first round (i guess depending on when you got your data card)....

unfortunately there is nothing that can be done....Alltel decided to actually uphold the terms of the service agreement. If a certain percentage of your useage is on a roaming partner's network, per the service agreement, they can terminate your service....(which most other carriers have been doing for a while)...

being angry won't change anything...we never hoped this would happen with anyone, but I've seen a good amount of customers in the same situation. At least they are giving a little credit to offset the hassle.

at least this is only with data cards and not any other product/service (tethering, voice use, smart phone use, etc)

If you need a wireless internet card, as much as it hurts to say, look and see if Verizon is a viable option....

good luck and hope everything works out for you

Thanks MowTow. I was just frustrated. I am sure I will just go back to tethering the Berry. I just hate losing most of the functionality of my phone when I am online. My poor Berry, I work it to death!....VZW would be at least $60 for the data card.

Is this for data cards only? Or voice lines too?

Not much you can say about it other than OK. One of those rules that was laying dormant in the terms of service just waiting to be called up at a time like this.

Alltel has been always disconnected users for high data roaming. I personally dealt with many customers who were disconnected back in 2007 & 2008 because Alltel had no EvDO in my local market and we relied on Sprint for Ev service.

It is a very simple business decision. Alltel can provide unlimited data to Alltel customers using the Alltel network because the cost is relatively fixed. It costs almost the same if you use 10 gb as it does if you only use 1 gb. However - when you go off network then Alltel must pay the roaming carrier per mb for your use. It is very easy for a single heavy data user to generate $10k plus in data roaming charges each month while only paying Alltel $40-$60 per month.

Alltel can only provide unlimited service to those that are using the Alltel network. Simple economics dictate that a company that buys an item for $100 and sells it for $10 isnt going to be in business very long.

Before getting upset, check the PRL list in your aircard...

Insert the aircard into your computer,
Open up Access (the program you use to connect)
Select Help
Select 'About Quicklink Mobile'
Under Hardware Information, Locate your PRL number
I believe the latest version is 41003

You could have a number higher than this...that is still an OLD PRL

If your number is different from the above then take your aircard into an Alltel Retail Store or Authorized Agent and ask them to update your PRL list.

The reason is...if your aircard has an old PRL list then it could be pulling off a Verizon tower when its not supposed to. The new PRL would direct it to an Alltel tower if one is available and your service could be restored.

We have had customers in our area of Southeast Georgia with the same problem. There is NO guarantee that your service will remain established but its worth a try.

Thanks everyone! I will say that the nearest tower to me is an Alltel tower-or that is what I was told. Can someone check the tower in "Bridgeboro" off Hwy 112? Alltel chose to keep us, they should be doing something so that we are not roaming off of VZW. I don't like calling 611 from my phone only to be connected to VZW. I had the PRL updated on the data card within the last 2 months but I will check it and post back as to what it is.

@Damngooddog-I just dont think I can walk in that Albany store. Last time in there I totally lost it with the Rep. I would rather go to the dentist! My Tour crashed. Totally crashed. Purchased on release date. She wrote me up for a replacment and sent me home with a plain old LG. When I called on Monday to see when the replacement would be shipped I was told it was not even back-ordered, just simply out of stock with no ship date available! Had the rep noticed this in the store I would have walked out with a new phone. (This is what I was told by CS) Instead they shipped me a new Tour. Now I am waiting for the warehouse to confirm the phone was in the box that was received back on 05/10 so the $578 can be credited to my bill of $740...if only I had not lost my Rep when he moved to Moutlrie who is now VZW...:(

For all that has happened, Alltel truly is my best option. I have never had coverage problems-no matter where I went. I just have to set my laptop up for tethering again!

Thank you all! I can always count on y'all for guidance!

I have been tethering to my Blackberry for 14 months now and the last 4 of those months have been in an area that has no Alltel service, so I am obviously roaming. I keep my phone tethered nearly 24 hrs a day. I am constantly uploading photos that are 10-15mb each. I also watch a lot of movies and TV shows. I checked my history through Quicklink Mobile and it shows that I am using about 30GB per month. I am not sure why I haven't been cut off yet but I am hoping it is soon. I really want to get a local phone number but I can't get one since Alltel has no service here.

Yes JT, it's VERY easy for a single subscriber to rack up $10k+ in roaming costs from everything I know. Remember, though, it goes both ways. Verizon subs roam on Alltel too. Historically, Alltel has always been on the winning side of this roaming game. That's been their main business. However, Verizon now owns all the non-overlapping parts of Alltel. That's a ton of lost revenue. AT&T will do fine. They bought their chunk of Alltel largely to reduce roaming costs. It's Atlantic Tele-Network I worry about. No way will they be able to keep up the "roam all you want, who cares" attitude Alltel has generally had...

The Commnet division of ATN is nothing but a 100% roaming provider so they may not enforce excessive roaming except for data.
Im still waiting for ATN to release their own prl so I can get an idea what direction they are going, Time will tell.

Well, now Alltel has decided that if you're using more than 50% of your data on your PHONE outside of their area, they're cutting you off - not just tethering, but ANY data. Got the phone calls yesterday (I have two phones that I use exclusively for high-speed internet with my family's laptops). They're not charging you an ETF but still....Alltel just keeps doing things to send them into the toilet with their customers. Maybe they have to financially but all it did for me was to say "Hmmm...may need to make a trip to the ATT store...". That's about $200 a month they won't be getting from me anymore.
