I swell up terribly from mosquito and black fly bites. Never did before last year and it is getting worse. What can I use to prevent sweling. I was bit at my hairline in the bvack of my neck and swelled down to the base of my neck...that was a week ago. The swelling is gone but the red, burny hard lump won't go away. I tried Bacitracin, alcohol, etc. and am afraid to get dirt in it -- my hair is not long enough to put it up out of the way and it is against the bite. All I need is an infection. I am allergic to bandaid adhesive, paper tape, etc. so I tried covering it but now my whole neck is sore. I need to do some cleaning as hubby is sick and has asthma and I need to keep it fairly dust free in here and haven't done anything for a week.

HELP>>>>>>>

At this point, I don't know. Did you try taking benedryl when it happened? I wouldn't worry about it getting infected at this point....unless you just scratched a big raw place and poured bacteria in!

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I did take Benedryl and it is still an open wound - that is why I thought of infection. I really can't see the back of my neck too well with a mirror - also it is right in the bottom of the hairline. I think I keep getting sort of a scab on it and it keeps coming off from showering, putting clothes on and off, etc. and that is why it is not healing.

Someone told me to use bleach but I am afraid to. I stopped the Bacitracin as I couldn't wash it out of my hair and it was just getting all over.:p

Actually, blaech and ammonia are good. But another suggestion is clear nail polish. And that will keep it sealed (I know, it's weird but it's what we do in the South for things like this and chigger bites).

Gosh, hope it wasn't a spider...........

I just scratched it open - instinct, I guess. Was so good all along too. Felt an itch and scratched not thinking. Then hubby said that's how you get MRSA - from fingernails....esp with my hair hanging on it and it is open now.

lol

Good comment by the poster on whether you're sure it wasn't a spider. You may need an oral antibiotic, I'd have it looked at. Showering also is contaminating and obvisouly rewetting the site.

For mosquito bites I make a paste out of aspirin, as soon as I feel the itching I apply it to the bite. Works like a charm! Of course, only people who aren't allergic to aspirin should try this. Not only does the aspirin prevent the intial swelling, but the reoccurring itch will not come on.

I think you should have it looked at, but if you don't, and if it were me, I would clean it an OTC antiseptic specifically for cleaning wounRAB, put an antibacterial ointment on it (make sure none of the products you are using have expired), you can leave it uncovered. I would keep the site dry for as many days as possible. Reapply ointment. If it is oozing at all, please go have it checked!

Oh and...can you maybe use a sweatband to hold your hair away from your neck? (I wasn't clear on exactly the bite was)
