Allergy shots and stopping early

Hi all--I was wondering if anyone on the board who has had allergy shots ever stopped them at a year and a half to two years and noticed if their allergies came back with a vengeance or did they have success? Thanks so much--Hopeto--
 
I never stopped them before the 5 year time frame but would assume that they would come back sooner than if you took the whole 5 year regimen.
 
I was on allergy injections for a nuraber of years and did fairly well on them. I moved to a different area and was taken off them due to a misdiagnosis and have been miserable because the injections are BADLY needed. It will take me a good six months since restarting them before I will feel like myself.
 
I tried allergy shots for the first time for 2 years, stopped because it got to be a real pain getting there (I had a new baby at home). In about a year they returned much worse, and I also had an asthma attack, which I had never had before, so now I'm back on them for over a year and feel much better. But that's just me, everyone is different.
 
Sinus rinses are just saline solutions and they prevent sinus infections - not cause them.
 
Hi Titchou! You're 100% correct in that they help not cause sinus infections. With the luck I'm having lately, I would probably end up with one! LOL My system is so sensitive to things it's ridiculous. I had an allergy test a few months back for food allergies and I itched and scratched all week. Not from the allergens, but from the tape! It was hypoallergenic tape and I ended up with a rash. I had my ears cleaned with an ear flushing system and ended up with an ear infection. See? No luck. I have to watch everything that goes into or on my body or I end up in the emergency room. I will try the rinse again, though--it does feel pretty good. Thanks so much--Hopeto--
 
Hi all--I was wondering about the shots because I've been getting them for a year and a half and as good as the shots are, I'm still contending with the sinus thing--i.e. dizziness, sometimes bloody mucus, etc. Weather changes really affect me and I have a lot of side effects with meRAB. I'm really gun shy about using the sinus rinses on a regular basis for fear of infection. I know--I'm probably making more of this than it is, but being scared I appreciate any feedback everyone has. i'm the same way when it comes to ear infections. anytime my ears are irrigated, i wind up with a painful ear infection. then again, i've had ear infections since infancy, so they aren't anything new for me.

to bring this back on topic, i've thought about trying allergy shots, but am still on the fence as far as that is concerned. i'm allergic to dust, pollen, ragweed, mold, pet dander, cigarette/cigar/pipe smoke, various fooRAB and scents/perfumes.

i take allegra and flonase along with 2 inhalers.

i just started the flonase a few days ago and have noticed a reduction in my sneezing.

if it turns out not to relieve my symptoms as well as i hope it does, i may consider getting allergy shots.

i was told by another meraber that the needles used for allergy shots are not large at all (i have a phobia to needles), so i'm thinking about discussing this further with my gp if flonase does not help.

i'm going to wait a month or so to see if flonase helps, but if it doesn't, i'll definitely look into having allergy shots.
 
The needles are like insulin ones so they are very small. I hate needles also and at the beginning of all my series Ihad 4 shots a week. I have to split my serum into two separate shots as some can't be corabined with certain others. So it was nerve wracking.

And please, go to an allergist for the shots..not your GP. I know you seem to have a lot of faith in this person but you really need specialist now that you've got other issues with it as well.

Oh, and to get your ears cleaned, don't let them flush them out. They can use a little crochet hook looking thing to take it out. That's how they do mine. I much prefer it though it tickles quite a bit.
 
My cochlear implant surgeon uses a crochet hook to clean my ears and this works much better for me than irrigation.

If I elect to have allergy shots, I will make sure to see an allergist. I'd like to wait and see how well my new treatment plan works and if I don't notice any satisfactory improvement, I will arrange an appointment with an allergist.

My son and I had shots for just under 2 years then we stopped we just started back as I saw that they were indeed working when my son doesn't have the shots he has chronic sinus infections when he has the shots just few a year.
 
my sister had allergy shots for 5 years. This was about 34 years ago, and has not had to get them again, and she does not get sick with sinus issues and the amazing part is that she had developed asthma really bad right before she started the shots, and to this day has no asthma symptoms. I am on my 5th shot, I probably needed them for years, but just didn't realize what was causing my symptoms. I never had the asthma symptoms until now and it is a mild feeling of small lung capacity when this happens...I guess some people really have been cured with these injections
