I have been prescribed a antibiotic for a tooth abcess. I have a total drug phobia, im not sure where it came from but everytime i get prescribed a drug i get panicky about having an allergic reaction. I know it's in my best interest to take it but i just can't get my head around it. Does anyone know how likely it is to have a reaction to Penicillin when i have never had one before, it just might put my mind at rest. (i know it sounds crazy)

Thanks

If you have never had the drug before, it generally takes 5 days for an allergic reaction to start.

If you've taken that particular medicine several times before and never had a problem, I doubt you will start now.

And if it does happen, it's unlikely to be dangerous. I have allergic reactions to antibiotics all the time. I break out in hives all over my body, I stop taking the drug, I have a good strong dose of Benadryl, and 4 hours later I'm fine.

Have you ever had an allergic reaction to a drug? Or a life-threatening allergic reaction to anything at all?

Hi Jane,

No thats the problem i have never had a life threatening allergic reaction to anything, I know it sounds crazy but i just have this fear of taking medication. I am pretty sure i have taken this medication before and not had a problem, but it was a long time ago.

Thanks for getting back to me, it's made me feel a little better.
