allergies and eosinophils

My 4 yr old son recently had CBC done and came back with an eosinophil count of 37%. Doc thinks it may be due to a dairy allergy (which he had from 1 - 3 years old, with anaphylactic reactions), but has been having dairy for the past year without obvious symptoms. Can an eosinophil count be that high because of allergies that don't have symptoms? Any other ideas?
 
Yes, it can. I know it's weird but have heard of it. I'm assuming you aren't doing a scratch test because of his age? That's the best test for environmental allergies and a blood test for food allergies.
 
Thanks for the reply. It's nice to know that this level can still be a result of allergies. I had read somewhere that eosinophils never go above 10% for allergies, and was starting to get nervious . . .We actually have done scratch tests and blood tests, all of which were negative. This was true even when he was having anaphylactic reactions, though, so we have always depended on food challenges to identify food allergies.
 
Food allergies can be the most challenging. You add into that the possibility of Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS) which is often seen as a regular allergy and it really gets confusing. Hope you get it sorted out soon.
 
Thanks. He has another blood test on Friday, so hopefully it is back to normal, and we can just keep dairy out. What is OAS?
 
OAS is when your mouth is sensitive to certain raw fooRAB....apples, pears, cantaloupe are top offenders. It isn't a true allergy because most people can eat them peeled or cooked if the raw causes itching and swelling of the lips or mouth.
