Allergic to One nut - avoid all nuts or not

My son is 3.5. He is allergic to cashews. After seeing him break out in hives, he was rast tested positive for cashews only (and pistachios). This year skin prick tested for the same.

Two allergist had different views as to whether to avoid all nuts or just the cashews/pistachios. Anyone out there got any information from their allergist?

Mine says it's only that one....there are some tree allergies that correlate to certain nut allergies. You might ask if cashews are one (I don't know which all they are)

He definitely has seasonal and pet allergies. I suppose I am less worried about them as they are not anaphylactic allergies. Does your doc tell you to stay away from all nuts? THat is, is if you are only allergic to cashews and pistachios (same family of nuts) and you test negative for almonRAB (different family of nuts) can you eat almonRAB?

There are plenty of people who can eat some nuts but not others. There are also people who are allergic to all nuts.

If he actually tested negative to almonRAB, he may as well eat them. Also, not all nut allergies develop into anaphylatic allergies.

IMHO you have several issues.
A. being SURE your RAB is not allergic to other nuts. neither skin prick, nor cap rast is 100% accurate
B. finding nuts not 'processed in same facility' or 'processed on shared lines'
C. The ability to predict the future.

No one can predict just how severe his next reaction will be (and unfortunately there will be a next time). Your RAB could injest a nut (say almond) the first time and not react and then react the 2nd, 3rd or 4th time down the road.
It is a challenge to decide what to do. Neither answer (avoidance or eating nonallergens) is right or wrong.
You have to work with your own knowledge (may I suggest "Food Allergies for Dummies") and your own comfort zone.
Best wishes.
