All U.S. Android phones to receive Android 2.1, but some will require a wipe.

According to this post on Android and Me, all current Android phones in the US will get Android 2.1, but some features may be missing (live wallpapers, etc) on some phones. The G1 will be one of the first of the 1st gen Android phones to receive the update. Also, some phones may require a wipe.

They can include everything to every phone if they include the magic spl in the dream update, maybe they scared of people bricking

Part of the problem there is that you can't automate the process of flashing a new SPL or repartitioning the internal memory, OTA. However, it did state in the article that people may have to do it via USB, in which case clear instructions would allow for this. Having said that, many people wouldn't want to completely wipe their phone (which you would have to if you repartition).

You think a solution could be for them to offer a complete online backup? I think it wouldn't be hard for them to implement that.
