All Time Great War Movies.

My favourites are

The Great Escape
Black Hawk Down
Platoon
(cried buckets at the end when Elias died )
Saving Private Ryan
Schindlers List
Dirty Dozen
Full Metal Jacket

.........................................

I love Where Eagles Dare too ... can watch it any time it comes on

... that, and The Guns of Navarone ( Mr Stavros ... I like you )

most of those shown on itv, channel 4 and channel 5 and the like,i'm sure you've seen them over the last 50 years.

Films in which the established actors don't die, and survive everything throughout the war,no really reality there.

Brilliant movie , it was so great to actually see a Hollywood movie which didn't glamourize war or seek to attach pre-existing labels to the characters or use overdramatic music. Just a good raw war film without any gimmicks.

Other than those:

Soldier of Orange (Paul Verhoeven). 1977. Voted 2nd best Dutch film ever in 1999 (Verhoeven's Turkish Delight came 1st).

No Man's Land (Danis Tanovic). 2001 winner of best foreign film Oscar.

Strayed (Andre Techine). 2003.

Battle for Haditha (Nick Broomfield). 2007.

My other half is a war film fan his choices are
Das Boot
Stalingrad
633 Squadran
Battle of Britain
Kellys Heroes
Saving Private Ryan
Schindlers List
Dirty Dozen
Battle of the Bulge
A Bridge Too Far
Bridge on the River Kwai
Also i know that these are not films but he also loved Band of Brothers and also Tour of Duty which was about the Veitnam war.My Choices are Gettysburg
Glory
Henry V(Both Versions)
Cant think of more at the moment my mind has gone blank if i do think of more will post!!

Can't believe no-one's mentioned The Deer Hunter yet, but I guess it's not necessarily classed as a war movie, more of an anti-war one ... and one of the most powerful drama ever made.

For realism - Saving private ryan

For action - Black Hawk down

For late night viewing - Apocolypse now

For pride - Dam busters, great escape, zulu & battle of britain.

General - Platoon & Full metal jacket

I also liked the Thin red line as I feel it's very powerful although it's a lot more peotic than most war films.

There are a few Asian ones out that look very good, can't think of the name but has anyone seen them? I think ones based on the Korean war and another on China communism etc.
