All I want is a new phone!!!

Just purchased the contract, phone, etc. from the company I work for. Been using the same phone for 3+years and no real complaints. Now that I own the phone would like to have one with larger keypad buttons. Went to my wireless provider (Verizon) and they tell me that I need to start a new 2-year plan from the today to get a new phone? (I've got 9 months left on the current 2-year plan). Tell them that all I want to do is purchase a phone. Nope....have to get a new 2-year plan. Is this standard practice? Can't I just buy a freakin' phone anywhere, stick in the card and go? I admit, I'm new to this and I would like info before I return to Verizon. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply, aepple. I guess that would take care of that. I noticed online that Verizon quotes retail prices for their phones and then the cost (usu. $0.00) of a new phone with a one or two year plan. So I can outright purchase one at retail then without a new contract?

Verizon usually allows their customers to upgrade to a new phone a little earlier than the full two-year contract duration. If you only have 9 months left, you should go to your local Verizon store and talk to a customer rep. Maybe they will cut you a deal, especially because they will want to keep you as a customer. Are you not interested in staying with Verizon? If not, there wouldn't be any point in buying one of their phones at retail, because they would have to activate it for you, and that would require a contract.

sounds to me like you got a pushy salesman (think commission), i would try quizzing a customer care rep on the phone about it and state that you do not want a contract extension and would like to pay full price for the phone.

thwn if you really want it from the store have them notate that in your account that it is OK, my Columbia, MO store has some people i have to get notes for in it.....

So I go into Verizon, repeat my request of getting/purchasing a new phone and get the same line about having to begin a new 2 year contract. I mentioned that I would wait the last 10 months of my current contract and get a new phone thru T-Mobile. 10 minutes later I walked out with a new Verizon LG. How sad you have to threaten to be a happy customer.
