In a reaction where 1-chlorobutane is mixed with NaI, will this solution form a precipitate? What about 1-chlorobutane with AgNO3?
Tert-Butyl Chloride with NaI? Tert-Butyl with AgNO3?
----We did this as an experiment in organic lab but I wasn't sure if I got the expected results and wanted to compare with what the actual results were supposed to be, so I can write it in my lab report.----
THANK YOU!
Thank you!

only tert-butyl chloride will give you a precipitate (ppt) with AgNO3
none of the sodium halides are precipitates in water.
silver chloride is a white precipitate.
so.....
1) CH3CH2CH2CH2Cl with NaI will not give u any characteristic reaction, they will all be mostly free ions in water. So, no ppt
2) CH3CH2CH2CH2Cl with AgNO3 may give negligible precipitation, as the carbocation and chloride ion maybe formed due to a polar solvent. But it is highly unlikely that it happens because a primary carbocation is not readily formed. If chloride ion is required, it must be through an SN2 pathway. But again, NO3- is not a good nucleophile. So, correct observation is no ppt.
3) tert-butyl chloride will readily form ions in water as tertiary carbocation is very stable, esp. tert-butyl cation ( i guess u know why). So, in the solution, u have tertbutyl cations, Na+ cations, Cl- and I- anions. But none of them forms ppt. So, correct observation is no ppt.
4) tert-butyl chloride again will give ions, along with the Ag+ and NO3- ions. here, u see ppt as AgCl is ppt. So, correct observation is white ppt.
