i would like to see a direct prequel to alien, at least one that perhaps showed us where the aliens come from, and how they got aboard the derelict, and killed the space jockey pilot
 
I agree with you that the original is better, but IMO the egg scene slows down the pace just when you don't want it to, and it doesn't add anything really worthwhile to the film. I can see why Scott cut it out in the first place.
Isn't the director's cut quite a bit shorter than the original release? If so, what bits of the original are missing?
 
I love Aliens, actually watched it before Alien, it's aboslute sheer brilliance.
Alien is class! a great Sci-Fi Horror, but I wish they never made a third and Forth.

AVP I actually looked forward to...........until 10 mins in to the movie, I couldn't believe they actually changed the timeline and based it in 2005 or 2005 (can't be arsed to look it up), plus I'm sure everybody was looking forward to lots of Aliens and lots of predators after watching the trailer, then it was a shite flashback sequence that was about as long as the bit in the trailer.

I will never watch the 2nd one, as the first PISSED upon everything the Alien and Predator movies stood for.
 
I could imagine all that without needing it spelt out. Really, there's nothing in it you needed to be told; it's pedestrian. And I thought it was great to come to the colony as the marines did, without fore-knowledge. Especially when they find Newt - the preamble bit introduces her as a character, so it's no surprise when she is found alive.

Again, I got the whole "Ripley as mother" thing without needing it spelt out.
 
I used to like Aliens better but after watching both last night, I now prefer Alien. Until now I never appreciated how much suspense is built up in Alien. I can't remember who directed it but whoever it was did a good job.
 
Ridley Scott directed Alien.

I've always preferred Alien over the sequels, although I loved Aliens when it first came out. Aliens hasn't withstood the test of my ageing years though, partly due to James Cameron's clunky dialogue, but Alien remains as excellent as it ever was.
 
I think both Alien and Aliens are excellent in their own right !..i personally prefer Aliens but the origional is a dark sci-fi horror classic! ...Ridley Scott was born in the uk in my home town of South ShielRAB !!
 
I too think that Alien 3 is a reasonable film with a sterling Bristish cast (all cast as convicts!!!).

The only problem I have with the film itself, is its use of sfx in realising the Alien. The first two films didn't need the Alien running around corridors and so didn't require anything other than a man in a suit. When the sfx took over in Alien 3 - it lost a lot of charm for me.

Still a good one though.
 
That's an interesting point. It's amazing just how bad the effects were in both Alien 3 and AR. The reliance on sfx and especially CGI really did play a major part in bringing the quality of the films down.
Ridley Scott knew the golden rule, when it comes to filming men in rubber suits , 'less is more' .
 
Alien - A great sci-fi movie and truly scary, especially for those who have never seen it before. Just has so much tension in it. 9/10

Aliens - Just an all round amazing film. Great acting, great action, great effects, great story, and great final 20 minutes! 10/10

Alien 3 - Nowhere near as bad as people seem to make it out as, and that was my opinion before I saw the Assembly Cut. Now, with the 30 mins of footage put back in the sorty makes more sense, is more enjoyable and the movie flows much better (although I preferred the original opening with the computer faces of the crew appearing with "DEAD" appearing underneath them rather then Brian Glover typing at a screen. A highly under-rated film and can easily hold it's own. 8/10

Alien Resurrection - Oh dear.. what have we got here? Cloning, lots of 'comedy' moments, bad script, annoying characters... and what's this... a 'newborn'? Ding ding ding! We have a winner folks... the worst film in the franchise is.... this one! 3/10

Now, AvP was bad, but a throwaway hour and a half, although there ws no real fighting between the two species which was so annoying, all that talking and blah blah, but no balls to the wall action! In AvP2 we got balls to the wall action but it was mixed in with an episode of Dawsons Creek and had lots of swearing thrown in for good measure. Ugh.. why did they bother?

Now, Sigourney recently said she was 'never saying never' about Ripley and another Alien movie, so I do think we will see another one in the next few years... but I would love it if they dropped the whole "she's a clone" thing and make a really decent story for it. 'Aliens' but set on the Alien's home planet. That would be quite good. I don't know if it would work with Earth as we already have had 2 films where that happened and they couldn't get it right, so why keep trying.

useless trivia

apparently michael biehn *cpl hicks* got more money for the use of his image in that computer screen shot in alien3, than he did for playing the character in aliens
 
the only time in alien3 that the creature looks remotely convincing, and actually moves with menace, is when ripley goes to look for it in the *basement* just after she strikes the pipe with the lice in, the creature glides down from where it is hidden in the pipes, and the way it moves is fantastic, reminiscent of alien, or aliens
