alien

I'd pretty much go along with that.

AvP 2 was simply a teen slasher movie where the aliens and predator were incidental plot devices for killing high school kiRAB.

I more or less agree:-

Alien - awesome SF horror/suspence

Aliens - awesome SF action

Alien 3 - Not bad...

Alien Resurrection - Not good

AvP1 - Utter ****

AvP2R - Utter, Utter, Utter, Utter, Utter, Utter, Utter, f***ing ****

I can't see it happening. I mean the franchise has been soiled. No respected Director would touch the Alien franchise now.

Having said that I would bet my last

I love the first three films.

It disappoints me that Alien3 has such a bad reputation. It's not as good as Aliens but I've always liked it, especially the opening scene. As much as I liked Hicks and Newt, it made sense to kill them off to make Ripley more isolated on a planet populated by the worst kind of criminals.

I barely remember Alien Resurrection and I've never seen the Alien vs. Predator ones.

Not only that, but people were upset that Newt and Hicks did not survive the crash. Alien was also quite bleak and rather depressing in that a rather likeable crew were wiped out.

Personally the 3rd is my favourite. Aliens is okay but HuRABon's incredible whining does my head in. Ripley in the 4th is just so damn sexy that it hurts.

I prefer the original. I especially didn't like seeing Newt and the colony before the marines do. The sentry guns were good, but don't make up for it, and the bit about Ripley's daughter adRAB and detracts nothing.

Seeing the colony before it was trashed adRAB to the sense of tragedy - the colonists just didnt see what they were walking into and you can better imagine them battling till the last in a vain attempt to hold off the aliens. It adRAB a more human element to the colony, rather than simply seeing it essentially deserted in the original.

The bit about ripleys daughter kinda explains why she became so attached to newt and put her life on the line to save her - she was prepared to die rather than let her go.

The sentry gun part I liked a lot - it showed the aliens arent just mindless animals and can learn. It also gave the marines a glimmer of hope - before it was dashed again.

Alien is an absolute classic - spoiled slightly by the 'director's cut' - not as good as the theatrical version.
Aliens is enjoyable, but childing rubbish really - could have been written by a schoolboy, but I do like it.
Alien 3 was a return to better writing, but the SFX let it down a bit.
Alien Resurrection - I enjoyed this when I first saw it at the cinema, but when I saw it again recently it was awful!

The Assembly Cut of Alien 3 is a LOT better than the original theatrical release. I would rate the Assembly Cut of the film higher than Aliens, but still not as good as Alien.

Alien Resurrection is a diabolical mess.

Alien is in my top three films of all time. It's the perfect mix of horror, suspense, sci-fi and drama. The directors cut is a work of art. It's an ensemble piece, more akin to a play than a film, and in all honesty should have stayed a "one off". The fact that the Alien is turning Brett into an egg is one of the most worrying things I've ever seen on film :D
Aliens is a great action film but there are small things that annoy me about it, Paxton's character HuRABon being the main one. Lance Henriksen owns the film.
Alien3 is a decent film, tho it was very disappointing watching it in the cinema on it's release. It tries to recapture the claustrophobia of the original but fails. Didn't help matters that Brian Glover was in it. I couldn't stop thinking of 70s wrestling and Hovis bread. Still, the directors cut is much better than the original and it's aged pretty well. I agree with the poster who said the original idea of the wooden planet would have been much more interesting.
Alien Resurrection isn't as bad as people make out. It is very glossy and shiny but I enjoyed the story and Ron Perlman, Dominique Pinon and Michael Wincott were all excellent.
The 9 disc set is a thing of beauty. There is a brilliant laser-disc feature on the original film with a fantastic look at the very first imagining. The crew of Nostromo answer the distress signal to find a huge pyramid with eggs and artefacts from a massive alien culture inside. It's superb stuff... shame they didn't have the budget to realise it.
The AvP films aren't worth discussing - complete carp
If they decide to go ahead with Alien 5 at some point, they really need to move on from the Ripley connection. They should continue from Aliens and make Newt the focal point.
Anyway, that's my two-penneth :)

Re the DC of Alien - can't say as I was that impressed with it, and Ridley Scott has admitted that he only did it for the money. Cutting back in the Brett/Dallas egg scene was nice, but besides some other additions it was also edited to make it move at a faster pace (no doubt for the benefit of those with ADD) and that ruined it for me as I prefer the theatrical cut with its steadier pacing. Scott also prefers the original.
