Alien 5

I don't mind Resurrection at all, I've seen worse films. I just wish they'd either concluded the story at Resurrection or at least make one more to round it up. The franchise can't end with these AVP movies! And hurry up Sigourney, you're turning 60 soon!!...well, if Sly can manage it, I'm sure she can. They just need a good story, good director and a good cast.

I'd say he's more like a man who, in future, decided to direct anything he wrote to maintain artistic control. Least then, the buck stops at him and he gets what he had in mind, for better or ill. Me, I liked A:R, although I think the 'newborn' look utterly ridiculous.

Yeah - whats the matter with Alien Ressurection?

Its got great cinematography, great direction, great actors and great lighting.

Script aint bad too. I think it will be re-appraised in ten years the same way Alien 3 has been.

Alien Resurrection started OK, then got really silly really quickly. Sigourney might as well had phoned her part in, Winona Ryder just looks out of place in an Alien movie, and most of the supporting cast are known actors who are pretty big in their own rights, it all smacked of celebrity and boasting a big named cast. The most hard to believe part wasthat they cloned Ripley and now shes half human half Alien. There's just so many wrong things about the movie. It may well get re-evaluated like Alien 3 in 10 years time but I liked Alien 3 from the start even before I saw the Assembly Cut, but I know for certain I will never like this film as much as the other 3 and will never rate it at more than 3/10, and that's being generous.

Alien Resurrection was pretty decent for the first hour then with the exception of the underwater bit and the lab mutants it was a downhill slide from Michael Wincott dying way too early to the appearance of the godawful Newborn. Even Whedon hates it, and he wrote it!

I like Ron Perlman, but he was a typical meat-head character in this film, all dirty talk and one liner put-downs. I don't think any of the cast members really looks comfortable or right for their roles. And the guy who played the captain of the ship... he comes across as so dumb and aloof and he just remindes me of Eugene Levy, which is a bad thing.

According to interviews, Whedon didn't write the newborn section as it appeared. The final part of Whedon's script involved a battle on Earth, but Fox wouldn't budget for it. The rest of the film is Whedon, but not as he intended.

There's some amusing and intersting stuff from him on the Wiki page:

Screenwriter Joss Whedon was unhappy with the final product. When asked in 2005 how the film differed from the script he had written, Whedon responded:

"It wasn't a question of doing everything differently, although they changed the ending; it was mostly a matter of doing everything wrong. They said the lines...mostly...but they said them all wrong. And they cast it wrong. And they designed it wrong. And they scored it wrong. They did everything wrong that they could possibly do. There's actually a fascinating lesson in filmmaking, because everything that they did reflects back to the script or looks like something from the script, and people assume that, if I hated it, then they’d changed the script...but it wasn’t so much that they’d changed the script; it’s that they just executed it in such a ghastly fashion as to render it almost unwatchable."

Joss Wheedlydoneitwrong sounRAB like a right bitter c@nt.

He couldnt have asked for a better director and a fine set of accompanying actors.

If he regarRAB it as unwatchable then he hasnt seen 'Eraserhead'

I thought it was decent enough up untill the whole newborn, ending totally ruined it for me.

It's still my fouth favourite but ending aside I think it's pretty good. It's visually stunning which you would expect from Jeunet and has it's own unique style and take on the Alien saga. All four films are worthy in my eyes for different reasons.

Just a shame about the last 15 minutes or so :(

Paddy - I think that was the whole point of his character and what made him endearing. He was a big, dumb lout.

He certainly has the face for it.

But it ruins it, because how could someone like that get to be captain of a ship? Would have been much better for him to be a complete hard ass bastard to the Betty crew and Ripley so we would be glad he got his just desserts. But the way he just stanRAB there after the Alien stabs him in the back of the head and pulls part of his brain out and then looks at it is just completely stupid. A truly awful part of the film.

Can't say that I blame him under the circumstances.

Seems to me that the director was unsuited to this film. Oh, and BTW, I loved Amelie.

Yes there were rumours That Sir Ridley Scott and James Cameron were to team up for a 5th film where Ripley would go to the Xenomorph's home planet and wipe them out permanently.

I still really don't understand how AvP killed off Aliens.

Considering how dire the AvP films are, it shouldn't be too hard to pretend they never existed!

I agree it really could have done without the newborn. They could have just made it the Queen Alien coming after her and it getting sucked out into space...ala Aliens again, hehe. The newborn was just weird and disturbing, even more so than the Aliens look.
