Alien 3 script

agreed, great post!

although I actually would have liked to have seen another version where Hicks and Newt survived, something like the Earth War spin off novel...

and I don't think ALL of Resurrection is terrible - I like that it went the way everything was supposed to go from the beginning - ie: the experimentation on the Aliens by Weyland-Yutani... but they could have done it much better, particularly with that awful new breed thing at the end...

I liked this William Gibson script though, it was certainly entertaining and extremely gruesome - I'm not sure how exactly they could have pulled it off with SFX, but it would have been interesting to see... sadly, because of Resurrection, Giger has pretty much distanced himself from the whole series now, so it probably would look a bit crap now :(

Alien is the story of Ripley; the whole focus of the series is on Ripley's star-crossed love affair with the alien. To maintain characters across the films would be to break this bond. By killing off Hicks and Newt we keep the sole constants of the films being Ripley, Weyland-Yutani, and the beast.

I have to disagree here. The series is Ripley's story, and all other characters exist solely to drive her development. Newt and Hicks were perfect characters for developing the humanity of Ripley, and also for slaying a few ghosts (see the answer to Newt's question "Can we dream now?").

There is no further character development for Ripley from these two. We need to move on, while keeping the focus on Ripley. So they have to die. God I'm a cold bitch sometimes.

I'm presuming you haven't seen the Extended Cut that re-established over 30 minutes of essential plot and character development. Watch it - you might be surprised!

Okay, I apologise for that. As I said in the other thread, I think the major problem people have with the film is that their expectations were shaped by Aliens towarRAB expecting an Aliens 2, rather than Alien 3.

Isn't one of the main reasons Newt was killed off because the Alien3 was made 6 years after Aliens?

The actress who played new would be too old to play the same character again by that time and a new actress would lose continuity- so easy solution was to get rid of Newt.

The reason Newt was killed off was...well, can you imagine the situation of her being in the penal colony? They nearly rape Ripley for god's sake. As for Hicks, he could only return if played by Michael Biehn and he wanted nothing to do with a non-Cameron sequel, he wouldn't even let them use his image in the movie. This is why the only solution was to kill them both. It also help make Ripley's situation much more dangerous with Hicks dead.

Now that is interesting. I didn't know that. In that case I guess their hanRAB were pretty much tied.

Still a pity though, he was a good character.

Aliens 3 i thought was a good film, not great but good. You really had to try and dis associate (sp) the first to from it. Alien 4, now that in my mind was a TRAVESTY of a film.

There was very little original in it and like terminator 3 (waits for the flames) just seemed to nick the best bits of the previous films and mash them all together in a hollywood "nicking the best bits means we have a good film" style.

Alien 4 was a brave step in some directions and yet in other it seemed to bottle it. The relationship between Riply and Winona Ryder is very like her and newt. Just a shame that Ryders acting in this was just so out of place and quite pathetic that having a pivitol role placed on her just didnt suit the film.

It did borrow a few things from the books that I;ve read but again it just seemed to be the best ideas mashed together, such as the alien recognition. In the book the scientist that tries to train the aliens admits that the most you would hope to get out of an alien, is a split second before it kills you

Alien 3 was different and i loved the way it was shot and directed. Someone please fill me in about these 30 minutes or something thats been talked about please :D

the extra footage is fantastic and provides a much better rounded film and gives much more characterisation to the inmates, as opposed to the bunch of foul mouthed skin heaRAB we had before, like with golic worshiping the beast, and even the ox birth makes more sense than a dog!. basically an improvement over the original in every way.

I've been a fan of the Alien films as long as i can remember, in fact Alien was probably the first 18 my Dad ever let me watch as a kid. I think that Aliens is by far the best, it's got a great story, great acting (Come on, even Bill Paxton's overacting as HuRABon is brilliant!), and the action scenes are excellent. Alien was a good suspense movie, and Alien 3 is more of a sequel to Alien than Aliens due them being fairly similar, what with the one alien in a large place theme.

The "Assembly Cut", as it has been dubbed, of Alien 3 is infinitely better than the theatrical version, it deepens the characterisation of all the characters, improves the effects slightly, and overall makes it a much better film. Although i have to admit to liking the theatrical version too, i never saw what everyone's problem was with it. I guess everybody was expecting it to be more like Aliens.

I also have to say that i like Alien Resurrection as well, while i do kind of believe that they should have left it at three considering the 'closure' of the ending of the third film, Alien Resurrection is still an enjoyable film, it's just not quite as good as the previous 3.

Still, in my local Morrisons you can pick up the DVD's of Alien 3: Special Edition for

I think that is what the problem is.

People loved Alien, and went to see Aliens expecting the same, but got something better, so they liked it more. Then, they went to see Alien 3 they were expecting something more like Aliens, and got something more like Alien in return, so they were dissappointed.

I personally love Alien 3 and the Assembly Cut even more so. I also love Aliens too. Alien is a good film, but I prefer the first 2 sequels. Alien Resurrection is just an effects filled mish mash of different styles that doesn't work well. Why Sigourney signed up I will never know. Surely she wasn't *that* desperate for money?

Let's just hope if they make an Alien 5 that it doesn't turn out to be like Alien Resurrection. (Although if it doesn't turn out to be like Aliens, the fanboys will probably throw a worldwide strop...)

Having waded through that script, I can happily confirm it is really quite bad. I can see why it was rejected by a studio who actually wanted to put Weaver in the movie to a decent extent

Eventually he did though. He was paid more to have his face, (well, a computerised image of it), shown at the start of Alien 3 than he was paid for acting in Aliens.

I'd rather have seen Vincent Ward's idea for the third Alien movie really. Alien 3 never really transcended being a tortured mish mash of several ideas.

I'll correct that slightly if you don't mind:

I just hope that if they make Alien 5 it is NOTHING AT ALL to do with the awful travesty that was 'Alien Vs Predator', i almost cried when i came out of the cinemas after seeing that, not only had they managed to make the Aliens seems crap, but they managed to make the Predator, the greatest and most evil killing machine in the whole universe, into a "good guy" character!!! Seriously, what the f*ck?. All copies of AVP should be burned and Paul W.S. Anderson should be shot.

I heard a rumour a while back that Ridley Scott had a few ideas for Alien 5, hopefully something with him will come to fruition.

now - i havent given myself much time to read the script - but if it was the Earth based story - that will be worth reading.

I remember very well Alien 3 being planned - and ages before it came into script form - the slogan for the film was originally On Earth Everyone Can Hear You Scream - which got me very excitied!!

i was disappointed when i did fianlly see Alien 3. but its much better then Alien 4 - which was reminRAB me very much of the dark horse comics i used to read about Aliens.
I always found Ripleys death very moving - especially with the chest burster popping out. its a pity those who devised the Alien 3 special edition hated the chest burster scene - hence it being cut - and making the death scene crap in my eyes - but that would have made the special edition of Alien3 perfect!

And - i also remember - the reason why Ripley was killed off was because S.Weaver said she wanted to killed off and wanted no more to do with it!!!! i guess the money for alien 4 was to good!!
Alien 4 is a fun film - but i always regard the Alien films as being a trilogy - with an extra added Next Gen film!

AlienVPredator would have been "ok" to - if it wasnt set in modern day earth. should have followed the original comic story line - that was excellent.

Predators have always been good guys. In the first film one of them holRAB off attacking certain characters because they are not armed. The second film enRAB with the human reaching a tacit agreement with the surviving Predators, and both sides show they are honourable.

In fact, that's one of the basic problems with AvP is that a 3-way fight was always going to go that way, with humans allying with Predators against Aliens. It would have been more interesting if the humans had allied with the Aliens, and one of the sad things of the franchise is that Alien intelligence was downgraded to make that all but impossible.

(Arguably towarRAB the end of A2 Ripley forms an agreement with the mother Alien, to the effect that she will be allowed to leave if she doesn't destroy the eggs. And Ripley arguably breaks it by making her exit and then flaming them. There was a lot of potential in Cameron's Aliens. He left it more open whether they were running on instinct or whether they had planning and foresight.)

Also in both films the humans ultimately win. The Predators are hardly the greatest killing machines if Arnie can beat them one-on-one.
