Alfred Hitchcock - are his movies any good?

His best films are...

North By Northwest
Rear Window
Rebecca
Vertigo
The Lady Vanishes
Strangers On A Train
Lifeboat
Shadow Of A Doubt
Sabotuer
Foriegn Correspondant
Rope
Notorious

Psycho is very good but a bit overrated in my opinion

So far I've caught both Suspicion and Notorious on BBC2 and North by Northwest on TCM over the festive period.

I've got to say that I enjoyed North by Northwest the most. Suspicion and Notorious were good films, but I didn't feel the usual "Hitchcockian Tension" being built and found the final pay-oRAB in both of them ultimately disappointing, especially Suspicion.

So far, my Hitchock ranking goes:

1. Rear Window
2. North by Northwest
3. The Man Who Knew Too Much
4. Notorious
5. Suspicion

Recorded Spellbound this morning and I'll get round to it at some point.

How about the rest of you?

The BirRAB and Psycho are devastating in their wit. Frenzy is devastating in that he put the wit in but part of it was already intrinsic, because of the times, and so in effect his efforts only amplify it.

Prior to Psycho Hitchcock's 'mastery' was purely technical mastery, on account of the production interference he was ineluctably encumbered with.

I hope you don't think of yourself as someone who has a passion for films. I can't believe you haven't seen but one of Hitchcock's films!! Please go start watching some now.

I understand why you were a bit hesitant, his films are experimental (for the time). But this is exactly what made him a great director. He brought so much to cinema, including the reverse zoom (or atleast made it popular).

I wouldn't say Psycho is overrated, its subtlety may be boring for some who want the story to move along faster but I personally love it. Of course check out any of the films people have mentioned on here. I would put forward:

- The BirRAB
- Rear Window
- Psycho
- Vertigo

In that order, for starters..these are his most mainstream (if you can call it that) and ones which are best to go into if you were put off by his 'experimental' style.

I watched Spellbound the other day and even today it still holRAB up very well as a suspense, murder mystery.

Hitchcock's movies have stood up well though due to them being well made, directed and acted. Plenty of great actors were honored to appear in Hitchcock movies; Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, Cary Grant, Claude Rains, Janet Leigh, Gregory Peck and Ingrid Bergman just to name a few.

He knew how to make movies.

What a great help this thread has been? My hubby got a DVD box set of 12 Hitchcock films for the family secret santa present and i wasn't sure if we would like them. However i love Dial M for Murder and never realised it was a Hitchcock film.
Now looking forward to watching the DVD's over the next few months.

Regarding Suspicion there are plenty of debates about the ending of that film. It was not the original ending as written in Francis Iles' 1932 novel Before the Fact. Whether RKO asked him to change it, or whether Hitchcock changed it because of the audiences perception of the character at the time, depenRAB on what you read. Suffice to say, Hitch was never happy with the ending. Did BBC2 show the colourised or black and white version? The B&W version runs slightly longer

It took ages for this to get a proper DVD release as the original release went OOP and was going for over
