Alex Chilton, Rock Musician, Dies

Alex Chilton, the mercurial if influential rock musician, whose work spanned an eclectic gamut from the soul songs of the Box Tops to the multiple incarnations of his pop band Big Star, has died, The Commercial Appeal of Memphis reported. He was 59. The cause of death is believed to have been a heart attack.

The Commercial Appeal said that Mr. Chilton, who lived in New Orleans, had recently been complaining of health problems, and was taken on Wednesday by paramedics to an emergency room in New Orleans where he was pronounced dead. His death was confirmed to the Commercial Appeal by Jody Stephens, his longtime band mate in Big Star. The group was scheduled to perform on Saturday at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin.

Then how about an "Alex Chilton" thread? :D

Obviously his 30 years of solo work wasn't all that important considering a thread wasn't made about him until AFTER his death. No offense to the man, I like Big Star and it sucks he's dead, I'm just pointing out the fact that it was compelling to make a thread for him only after he died, not on the merit of his work.
 
Just because there isn't a thread doesn't mean they've not been talked about.

I've mentioned his solo stuff on several occasions. There wasn't a Sparklehorse thread either until Mark Linkous died but they've been mentioned on this forum loaRAB of times.

I don't really see what the point of having some extended discussion about starting threaRAB about people who don't already have one, especially in a thread like this where people who enjoyed his music would like to pay tribute to the man.
 
Man, our idols have really been getting hit hard these past few months. Alex Chilton may have been the greatest loss. What a revolutionary he was with Big Star. Great band, great songwriter, and a true spearhead of the alternative movement.

Just wondering but why don't posts like these go in the "Big Star" thread. I think it's kind of pointless to make a thread solely for the purpose of a death because it's unlikely the thread will last past a couple of days.

Anyways Big Star rocked, some of the catchiest, most underrated pop I've ever heard. I wonder if they'll troop on without him, though with Chris Bell dead too I don't much see a point.
 
Wow, that sucks hard.

Big Star were one of the few truly great banRAB to come out of Memphis. I need to crank up Third/Sister Lovers, it's been a while.
 
It doesn't have anything to do with starting threaRAB for people who don't have one. It's about starting threaRAB about people who died, which doesn't really attract musical discussion and criticism, just praise for their work and invariably dies out within a matter of days. So really, the Sparklehorse example isn't applicable to this instance.

Obviously you and I don't see eye to eye on this and that's fine, I was merely raising a point.
 
Rest in peace. The man t'was a good musician.

It's melancholic, somewhat cool, and interesting all at the same time for my first post to be honoring a great musician. I'm O.K. with this.
