Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms In Animation

Well, when I was growing up, Popeye always had a pipe, The Penguin always had a cigarette holder, and so forth. And to tell the truth, I never really paid any attention to it one way or the other. It was just something that they did. I never smoked just because I saw Popeye do it or point a gun at somebody because Daffy could get shot and live. I never had even the slightest inclination to do such things. I don't know if it was responsible parenting or because our society as a whole wasn't as dumbed down then or what... just my two one-hundredths of a dollar...

That was "The Legend of Dratini".

And let's not forget the infamous "loaded fingers" (i.e., guns digitally removed by 4Kids censors) from Yu-Gi-Oh!.

Or as LittleKuriboh calls them, "invisible guns". I didn't check all the threads, but I believe nobody has mentioned Sanji from One Piece, and more specifically, the 4Kids dub. Somebody went as far as having a flash movie insulting the shows from the 2003-2004 season with him showing it was a lollipop in his mouth and not a cigarette.

Uh...the 4Kids dub didn't even premiere until 2004. The lollipop edits didn't originate with Sanji, though. Back in the day, there were tons of cigarettes being replaced candy canes and lollipops.

And actually, I'd rather have a lollipop than no cigarette at all. The latter seems really awkward.

Professor Utonium was sometimes shown with a pipe in "The PowerPuff Girls", though don't recall if it was lit or not.

Most cartoon gangsters seem to get shown with a cigar (or some cigar-like object).

While in real life I'm not a big firearm fan, I don't have a problem with firearms in cartoons. I usually found firearm gags as amusing in Looney Tunes, etc., and can't imagine Batman:TAS with goofy laser-weapon-thingies instead of tommy guns.

Never had a problem with alcohol in cartoons either, though alcohol doesn't seem to get featured as often as tobacco or firearms (fancy parties aside)...
