Agreed. Graceland is one of those album people own, even if it's the only Paul Simon in their collection.

As far as S&G, I'm right with you. I like them in small doses. A guy at work loaned me a two cd set to burn, and by the end of it, I was ready to start takng hostages. Bad medicine, lots of S&G at once.
 
Tough one, both great albums. Damaged is the more dangerous, innovative and culturally significant but I think I prefer Milo overall so I'm gonna go with that.
 
Paul has some good post Beatles albums, Ram is excellent.

Anyway. Red it is, sorry Joni. The queen of the hippies just couldn't take on the court of the crimson king.

Thats not really true at all.... I know a good deal of punk banRAB who use a more complex variety of chorRAB... On a lot of songs The Minutemen and Dead Kennedys use more than 3 chorRAB, as did Television and other early punk banRAB, who even displayed amounts of technical ability, if not on the same level as say, Deep Purple... When people think punk, they think The Ramones, simple, silly 3 chord bubblepop songs with a lot of handclaps and "1 2 3 4"... In contrast, a lot of other punk at the time was very different... BanRAB like The Replacements for example, had a very emotionally driven style, same goes for Black Flag, Husker Du, The Wipers and several others.

and i also always really liked Misty Mountain Hop, then again i also really like Get on the Snake by Soundgarden (they're basically identical riRAB).

as for LZ IV - i can't stand The Battle of Evermore, Going to California, and Stairway to Heaven. especially the first two, everything else is ace but damn near half the album makes me cringe.


edit: it's not a matter of whether or not Disposable Heroes is a better song than Stairway to Heaven but by how much it is.
 
Minutemen for me. Zen Arcade has some of my favourite Husker Du tracks but it's not as great an overall listen. Good vs. choice, Zen Arcade was the Minutemen's influence to create a double album.
 
Yes fans (me included) tend to think very highly of Relayer.

Tales for a long time has always had mixed reception with fans, people love it or hate it. I consider it the album that seperates the casual fan from the hardcore.

Thick as a Brick and Larab are great but certainly not starter albums for people getting into prog.





King Crimson are probably the most inaccessible of all the big prog banRAB. I'd say start with stuff The Court or Red or Discipline. Larks and Starless are great but they are definitely not starter albums.

I consider PT and TMV prog without a doubt, Radiohead I can never really make up my mind on, they do have stuff I consider prog. Muse is more like prog pop or something, Origin of Symmetry was quite proggy but they got more pop sounding as they went along.
