First country album I ever bought, before then I subscribed to the notion that all country music (aside from Johnny Cash and Hank Williams) was lame. Boy was I wrong.

While it was actually the Blackalicious song "Alphabet Aerobics" that made me realize they was some talent in hip hop, this full album really gave me the full appreciation of the genre, and was the stepping stone to find more groups.

While I was already a fan of metal before I heard this album, this made me truly see the beauty behind it. I don't think anybody has ever topped this album as far as composition is concerned. Lyrically it is also among the best.

I've got two:

Strange Kind of Love by Love and Money.
Hats by The Blue Nile.

Made me far more appreciative of songwriting, lyrics and how much a fabulous voice can move you.

1986. 14 years old. Shaped me forever musically and wouldn't be here now talking about music.

Plenty more shaped me along the way such as:

Pink Floyd - Meddle
Napalm Death - Scum
Tangerine Dream - Underwater Sunlight
Underworld - Second Toughest In The Infants
Melt Banana - Cellscape.

In retrospect this album doesn't seem like a big deal but at the time of its release it caused a lot of people, including me to do a double take and say "wha.....arent these the fight for your right to party guys" Not only was the album itself awesome, but three guys that we'd associated with novelty white rap were breaking out their instruments and laying down some of the best retro-soul/acid jazz iv'e ever heard completely interlaced with fantastic hip-hop. Such an underrated album.

The first metal I played in its entirety.

Gave me hope that current hip hop isn't total **** (I was beginning to lose interest at the time).

Probably Gun Club - Fire of Love. Before i 'took a chance' on that album i was pretty much just buying and listening to whatever was pressed upon me through the media. After it i began actively and seeking out music deviating away from mainstream media and my outlook has forever been changed by my discoveries over the last few years.

This album got me into progressive rock at a very early age. About 12 when I got this and was blown away. Got me into bass guitar also.

Ahh yes, I know it seems cliche... and i agree. But at the age of 10 i got my first hand me down cd. A copy of back in black from my uncle... along with Bad Company 'Live". I played this cd a thousand times if I did once. Really got me started on rock music.

This album opened my eyes to a genre that i really wasn't into at the time. Hip hop. I was never a huge hip hop fan, due to lack of exposure and an understanding in general. This album changed that. One of the best concept/themed albums ever, this album definately changed my life.

Ah, yes, the Beastie Boys - truly talented musicians. I'm sure you've heard Sound from Way Out, then, if you're into their jazz. Also, have you seen Holy ****! I Shot That!?

I' m not one of the older merabers on here and I think I came into music pretty late (I mean, I was obsessed with the usual blink-182 songs and such of the day but nothing major), so my first important album is more current

Toxicity - System of a Down

It's still a great album, eight or so years later

Yes and yes.
In SounRAB from Way Out is more or less their "Greatest instrumental hits" album. for some reason something gets lost with the songs outside of the context of their respective albums. It's great music though and if you just lie to yourself and say your listening toan acid jazz comp it works. I ****ing Shot That was good but it did look like it was shot w/ a bunch of handycams, which it was. lol

Blackalicious #1 hip-hop artist for me, Melodica (1995) was a huge break through for them. If you want that EP send me a pm
