Album Club

Writing a detailed review of the album and listening to music you may not have otherwise are, together, the elements that make up the entire aim of the album club thread. If you're not game, why participate?

I don't really mean to be a jerk or anything, but I'd hoped this thread might generate some genuine, thoughtful discussion. I know it's tough to muster up the energy to write long responses when you're not required to, I have difficulty finding the inspiration to do so, myself, a lot of the time. However, I think if we're going to regularly devote time to visiting Music Banter, we should try to make it as intellectually engaging as possible. We should challenge ourselves and make this a place to really explore music, which requires detailed discussion. I won't push on this album any more, because it wasn't too popular, and that's ok, but it would be great if you guys decided to write a couple paragraphs about the next album that's chosen. How 'bout this...whoever next posts in this thread gets to choose the next album...that way you'll get something you're really into and you'll want to give us a great, thought provoking post about it. Sorry I didn't post about Beach House...but I didn't know we'd moved on from the Built to Spill record. So...who's it gonna be?
 
I have really never been able to get into Perfect From Now On as much as the other BTS stuff. I love Keep It Like a Secret, some truly incredible songwriting and guitar work.

And "Randy Described Eternity" is a good song, but my memories of it have been totally ruined from a BTS show I went to earlier this year. Their encore was a 20+ minute jam of "Randy Described Eternity" that was intolerable. Jesus, it was bad. The rest of the show was horrible to, I lost a lot of respect for BTS after seeing them live :(. Meat Puppets were a great opener though.

Great album, there's no real filler, even the shorter tracks, because everything helps the albums flow. Nothing's just a throwaway. It's also a very unique production job, it sounRAB like a copy and paste job from outer space, if that makes any sense. Lyrically Del doesn't exactly turn out his best performance, but he doesn't really need to, the worRAB are just an amusing backdrop for the music.
 
It really annoys me how whenever people discuss 90s indie rock Built to Spill is usually completely left out of the conversation. I mean with There's Nothing Wrong with Love they showed themselves to be pop masters and still able to do some very odd things with it underneath the surface, odd time signatures, weird chorRAB etc. but with this album Built to Spill show straight off how musically arabitious they are, the shortest being under 5 minutes and the longest being just 9 minutes they went completely epic which was pretty opposite of what all that post-pavement weezer/presidents of the USA crap indie banRAB tended to be doing at the time.

Now I've always been hesitant to listen to this album because I'd seen the worRAB epic thrown around and lots of talk of the guitar work and looking at it was about three times as broad in its scope so I expected some serious overindulgence but I was shocked to find how well it flowed and how they didn't really pompous or bloated to me at all in fact these songs seem to flow together seamlessly and move with the gentle grace of a dancer who is indeed perfect from now on.
 
This is probably my favourite concept album ever made next to we're only in it for the money, everything is flawless and I guess this is one of the last old school recorRAB; but I guess that's why I love it so much, it took me back to when I was younger. The overall flow is a far cry from the tourist porn as stale as yesterday's brochette that you see being released nowadays. Furthermore this record makes me wish I was black, because the beats are so funky I can't help but dance so d/l it now and live again or alternately, you could do your laundry, which would be just as exciting and possibly more dramatic.
 
I'll upload an album and send it to the people on the list on sunday. I want to keep it going too, so it'll be there for people who want it i guess.
 
Ethan obviously picked it because this is my favorite Built to Spill album :p:. The guitar part at 4:07 in I Would Hurt a Fly is pretty much how I fell in love with them. That hit is just sooo perfect. It gets me excited every single time. Stop the Show the biggest and best oversimplification of what they are. Epic indie pop. And the opening vocals for Made Up Dreams are oh sooo good. Built to Spill covered Free Bird on 9/10/01. Coincidence? I think not.
