I have a 99 Buick Lesabre with a 1000 watt amp and 2 12" subs installed. This hasnt really given me problems other than lights dimming, and Ive considered upgrading the alternator but never did. Last weekend I installed a Hornet alarm with remote start and 2 way page. Three days passed and I start my car with the remote start. It turns on fine but when I proceed to step on the brakes the car shuts off. I get no power. The guy at the shop says I probably have a dead battery. Sure enough I jump the car and it runs fine. I take it to Oreilly and they test the battery and alternator, apparently everything was working fine.
I dont use the car much now that I go to school (I use cta) so I figured my battery slowly drained. A couple days after that my car wouldn't start up again. Once again my battery is drained. I jump it and its good. Here's my question: is the alarm strong enough to drain my battery after only a couple of days of sitting? Could it be my sounds even though those haven't been an issue? This problem only started after I installed the alarm. I don't know where to start, is it my battery that can't hold a charge? Or is it my alternator that can't provide the power? Supposedly they both work fine so can it be the alarm?
Also I was considering upgrading my amp to 1600 watts so I assume I would definitely need an alternator upgrade. My stock alt is 140A. How much should I upgrade to? 250A? Would a regular autolite battery suffice? Or should I go deep cycle? Im on a budget (college) so I can't be throwing money around. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
