Airport Check-in with Android

I get an email from Continental which allows me top pull up a barcode. However, the barcode needs to be a certain size else the scanner at the airport won't read it. The problem is I can't zoom the page as the zoom buttons which normall show up on the bottom aren't there. Is this a known OS issue because it seems to happen on other websites also. For example the google default search engine site doesn't zoom either. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Should I return the phone or is this something known?

Hi Statilius, Welcome to the community!

just out of interest what phone/ browser are you using?

I also found that using the stock browser on my HTC Desire meant that whenever the browser decided that i didn't need to zoom in it didn't let me!

Try downloading Dolphin HD browser, that seems to do as it is told! here is the QR Code to scan.

I have the Verizon Droid with firmware version 2.1. I downloaded Skyfire and it added the zoom buttons on the bottom but they didn't work either. I will try Dolphin assuming it's available for my Droid.

Well, I did download the Dolphin HD version and still have the same problem. I double tap and it won't zoom, nor will the zoom buttons show up. I did a hard reboot on the phone and that didn't help either.

That seems to be my work around. I also found out if I go to setting and click save text that the image is saved into another browser window that does allow me to zoom.

Some websites are made fixed size, including Google's Mobile site. So you can never zoom in our out on the phone.

Barcode scanners are designed to read at a range of distances (which appear as different sizes to them - further away appears smaller). However, what the problem most likely is will be that barcode scanners are nearly always laser based (if you see red lights coming out of them, they're laser based). These rely on the barcode being made from a white reflective material (e.g. white paper) with black lines printed on it. The laser scans over the barcode and reflects off the white parts, and doesn't reflect off the black parts. These reflections appear as pulses of red laser light to the reader, and the pulses are converted into data.

This is completely different from an LCD screen. An LCD screen is shining a white light through liquid crystal filters which produce different colours. The laser will not reflect off the white parts of the screen any more or less than the black parts. It will reflect off the glass all the time, hence it won't work as there are no pulses to read being reflected back.

Some readers are optical in nature, and they do work. But the vast majority are laser based.

I know the barcodes that go to PDA can be zoomed. The first time I utilized the droid it worked, ever since it hasn't for some reason. I can only assume the new OS. I also know from the first time I went through security that it could not be read until it was increased in size. The security personel also told me that most people have to zoom into the image to have it read by the scanner.
