I am having brown spots show up on my face. I am 38 and used to spend time in the sun--haven't in years now. I get a twice a month outbreak like clockwork. Around when I ovulate and when I have a period. I have an oily T zone and am covered in red scars. How can I keep moisture on my face so I don't age early and also keep oil off of my face? I have had it already!

I wash with acne medicated wash.

There are many decent moisturizers available in drugstores. Olay is a good one. The most important really is sunblock. Do you use it everyday? If not, your brown spots due to sun damage will get worse and the red acne scars will also get worse from the sun. I use the Neutrogena Dry Touch sunblock. It's not greasy though it does tend to leave a white cast if I don't spread it well onto the skin.

yeah, sunblock is very important with hyper pigmentation. another thing is, you may not need to use an acne facewash... it could be drying out your skin and causing excess oil production... and since youre skin is aging the acne is most likely hormonal, this means that your hormones are stimulating the oil glanRAB and since aged skin does not regenerate as well, the dead skin and oil build up easily and clog pores. The most important thing is to have a good face wash AND toner that won't strip your skin with chemicals. and definitely a decent oil free moisturizer. For a sunblock make sure it has an spf of at least 30 and is oil free... and make sure the label says "broad spectrum" protection. so that it protects from ALL UV rays. For your skin... I know a lot of good products you could use. It sounRAB like you would benefit most from a brand called lerosett. hope this helps ya.

I will give this a try. I do take a nuraber of meRAB, so will need to make sure it is ok with dr. first.
Thanks so much for your reply.

Hi Julie, I mostly lurk but I wanted to add that at around at 35 my skin started breaking out and then in early 40's, it was mostly cystic. For me, it's the chin area. I spent years visiting my dermo and then one day did a ton of research on the internet and tried this and it worked for me:

Daily:
1 tab of flaxseed oil
1 tab of 50 mg zinc (I read that women have lower zinc intake than men)
1 tab of apple cider vinegar (I would also drink a shot of vinegar before I finally bought the pill version. This helps with the acidic content of the body, balancing it.
1 tab of Saw Palmetto (100 mgs if you can find it - if you find the 450 mg - then take that every other day). This is an example of what I read on the internet and verified with a nutritionist:
Saw Palmetto: Other possible uses (based on tradition, scientific theories or limited research). Acne, anti-inflammatory, aphrodisiac, asthma, bladder inflammation, breast feeding, breast enlargement or reduction, bronchitis, cancer, cough, diabetes, digestive aid, diarrhea, excess hair growth, expectorant, high blood pressure, hormone irabalances (estrogen or testosterone), immune stimulation, impotence, indigestion, menstrual pain, migraine headache, muscle or intestinal spasms, ovarian cysts, pelvic pain, polycystic ovarian syndrome, postnasal drip, sedation, sexual vigor, sore throat, sperm production, testicular atrophy, upper respiratory tract infection, urinary antiseptic, uterine or vaginal disorders."

The only side affect for me has been an favorable increase in my breast size. I'm in my mid-40's now. I went on this in Summer 07. In Summer 08 I had a cyst that needed an injection. I returned to the dermo and he said "wow, your skin looks great and you haven't been here in over a year". I told him: "I have always thought it was hormonal acne and you never once suggested alternative measures"! I was so desperate before this regimen - hormonal blood tests are not completely accurate in that your homrones can be normal on Friday and a mess on Monday next! I also had horrible PPMD which has eased up dramatically since I started. Then my skin became so "normal" that I became lax and stopped taking it. Once I stopped, the cystic acne returned so I am back on it now. For me, I feel my testosterone levels are high. My sex drive has diminished but I chalk that up to hormones as well. The trade off is well worth it. Also, when I get a cyst, I will use white vinegar full strength on the spot which dried it out more quickly - you can dilute with water. Also, tea tree oil works well - I prefer vinegar lol
Good luck

I have stopped using my acne cleanser and also stopped using a powder after or instead of foundation on my face. I am instead using a foundation for oily skin and kitchen soap you use to wash dishes in the sink to wash skin with--why? Because that stuff is used to remove "grease" aka oil... In this dramatic change of behaviors-my skin is clear and pimples are gone. I have a glow now and only have fine lines around my eyes. Whee!!!

PS: I use clean & clear Moisturizer - I don't use sunscreen on my face but I do protect it by wearing hats or staying in shaded areas.
