Agendus 9.0 Released

Iambic has released Agendus 9.0. The beta site will close down later today. I have yet to play with the final version but the beta was pretty stable on the T3 and never resulted in lost data.

I hate that Iambic insists on getting another $9.95 (USD) from me for another freaking upgrade. Other than that gripe the program looks good and well worth the $9+ bucks!

I'd like to hear what others have to say!

There is nothing that states that you have to "upgrade". As long as the program continues to add features I'll continue to support it.

Datebk5, it's only true competitor, has updated their programs to work with newly released devices but the program has not evolved in over 2 years. There is not new functionality. There are no new features.

Agendus has added mobile Weather support, new task views and other refinements.

And as a beta tester, one must endure certain things but one does get upgrades for free. Also, you can purchase a subscription that covers the "upgrades" for a period of one year.

If a program is only tweaked to support new devices and hasn't refined it's interface nor supplied any additonal features that enhance it then I too don't think paying for it is appropriate.

I believe though in this case, Iambic has justified the upgrade charge.

If you look at Documents to Go, they have done the same thing over the last 3 versions as well.....both programs I can't live without but can understand the reason for "charging" for the additional costs involved in development.

I agree, and like I said I didn't really hesitate on paying the $9.95. The only downside to the weather reports and the quotes is that you have to have internet access on your PDA. Most Palms don't have that without the Wi-Fi Card. Oy

I'm trying to set up a pop e-mail account and everytime i get past the first screen. Display name, E-mail and Password my palm restarts. Whats up with that? I thought it was bug free?

Tinychart/sheet is used to show the charts in the various views of Tasks. It can be removed but you'll lose that feature.

Mail issue....I'd suggest deleting the entire program except for your Icons then reinstall. This seems to have solved any of the mail preferences.

Also, during the OTA install it will prompt you if you want to overwrite files that are present....with the exception of the icon set, you need to allow the other programs to overwrite.

You can avoid overwriting the icon set by simply choosing "cancel" when prompted and then allowing "replace" on all other apps.

BTW - emailed you the manual just a minute ago.

I posted under Agendus Beta thread, here:
http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=52107

Read this for some background.

Then, here's something to look at:
http://support.iambic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12391

As I thought, the FINAL isn't so FINAL - lots of bugs. 1.4MB, still unresolved problems from the V8 we all PAID FOR, and still more bugs, despite going from build 469 to build 473 in one day before release??!!

I maintiain that the upgrade fee is atrocious - I don't care HOW MANY improvements have been made, a 3 week limit on time is ridiculous - ANYONE purchasing ANY software should have more than 3 weeks to get an upgrade, especially when (as I thought), it's now a 50% bigger app . . . with more new bugs and some unresolved old ones.

I love Agendus . . . have been called an "apologist for Iambic" on their own forum in fact . . . but this is just silly. I believe I have even MORE "weight" when it comes to deserving a free upgrade - I not only upgraded to 8.06 PRO 10 weeks ago, but also purchased TinySheet and FastWriter some time back - both of which are now DISCONTINUED. That should go in my favor as well and I have outlined that in an email to Iambic yesterday.

Paul,

What bugs are you talking about? I found one with the iambic mail that was soon fixed by reinstalling the program and correctly unflashing (I think I coined a new phrase here :D ;) ) the components (what a pain lol).

What are the other bugs that I should be aware of?

Thanks buddy!

Take a look at the link above - or go to the Iambic site/forum/bug reports and just start reading!

I gave up after 10 minutes of it . . . apparently it's far from "finished."

I am sure, however, that they'll "get it done," so you haven't wasted your $9.95 -- it will probably take until "9.03" or so to get it "stable." It took til 8.06 for Version 8. By then Version 10 will really fix 'em, and we can all send in another $9.95.

Well, I think it's Pearl Harbor Day . . . the attached are about 4 threads out of 15 DATED TODAY regarding Version 9.

Most upsetting is apparently now you have to disable hacks (TealLaunch!) or it'll crash. That's right -- let's disable ALL REAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONALITY so we can have a "scissors" icon for the haircut. I feel like Nicholson . . .

"Do I bother you when you're Nancying around in your little garden?!"

Received an email this morning from James at Iambic saying I'm "outta luck" for a free upgrade, having purchased 8.06 PRO upgrade on 8/11/04. 3 weeks is the limit, and he can "make exceptions if it's close," (guess that means . . . 24 days??!!).

By the looks of this they're not getting $9.95 from me and 8.06 may be the last version of Agendus I ever use. Sad, because it really does ROCK and seems stable . . . but a 50% jump in size to 1.4MB, more bugs than Hollywood restaurant and COMPLETELY brash, rude and unacceptable attitude toward customers and "upsell" pricing bordering on extortion have me really miffed.

Please folks . . . spare me the "Well, no one's FORCING you to upgrade" defense; I want and have PAID FOR the latest and greatest - I'm monitoring around 15 software companies for upgrades all the time and NONE of them charge - see the "AcidImage/TealDoc/Bonsai" post of 2 days ago.

This stuff should include upgrades for a year - period. Unless it produces a virtual Angelina Jolie to give me "massage" while driving to the "appointments in my matrix" and figuring out my "TinySheet pie" of to-dos, it's a non starter. I'm livid, disgusted and most of all disappointed. They discontinued TinySheet (bought it!), but they're throwing in an auxhiliary "side app" as a feature of this thing?! A year after discontinuation?!

Read these comments and I think most of you will agree.

If you want to read ALL OF THEM (hope you've got a lot of time), here's the link to the Iambic Bug Reports Forum:

PTL as usual has valid points and there are some "issues" and complaints with Agendus.

I'm not going to be the one to state that it's perfect but on my T3, I'm not having any current issues.

I will state that one of the differences of some companies and the way the "market" their software and test it can be vastly different.

I don't agree with Iambic's pricing policy with regards to loyal customers and have been fortunate not to have to pay since 7.0 because of the beta testing.

And I guess I've probably grown so accustomed to using Agendus that nothing can ever replace it.......not so necessarily. I have tested other programs and can't get what I want from them. Therefore, I may be caught in the whirlpool of downward motion by sticking with Agendus.

Yet, I must say that all too often and more often then not software companies in the Palm OS field either release products to early or not early enough to keep up with the new devices.

Iambic is a perfect example of releasing a product too early. They did it with 8.0 and 7.0 and again with 9.0. It will probably be weeks before it's close to where it needs to be but let me say this:

They are still a responsive company. They listen and there are relationships with certain engineers that keep me going back because they do listen.

They are not of the same caliper as a Tealpoint or Bonsai and that is unfortunate.

And part of the problem with releasing too early is probably a couple of things:
1. Lack of efficient beta testers on each platform.
2. Lack of available equipment in their hands before the new hardware release.
3. And the split of P1 and Palmsource isn't going to help #2.

I must applaud them for having the guts to release the product in an attempt to satisfy the multitudes of customer that "early adopt".

They haven't done the best job of getting it right and even the DB5 took awhile to get a working product for the T5 and 650 and it's not perfect yet either.

I'm going to lay blame, more and more, with P1 for not using Public Beta Tester's which would alert many of the developers of the issues before the full release was necessary.

And Iambic needs to get off their dime and get their product fixed to a much higher level and do so consistently with new releases.

In the meantime, I'll continue to use it......and search for a better program if there is one that will fill my needs.

Ver 6 WAS good (I remember using . . . I think . . . 6.04/06/.24?) - can't remember.

I really liked 5.35, actually - solid blue day headers, around 394k.

There are a LOT of GOOD bells and whistles in 8.06 should you upgrade - I really must say it's a "good version," although 950k (you're sitting at around 420k, if memory serves).

The reason I'm "going off," is that on "MY IAMBIC" page you can NO LONGER get your "stuff" that you purchased. If something happens and I go there looking for 8.06 to re-download, there's an "upgrade" button. In other words I can't re-download the 8.06 I PAID FOR with a "pro upgrade fee" any more (that's ok, it's archived to hell in a handbasket on around 12 CDs, as is everything else) and must INSTEAD upgrade AGAIN to 9. If it were'nt for a member of another forum posting a link to obsolete apps, I wouldn't know where to get it. Here's the link:

http://www.iambic.com/download/palmos/obsolete/

Unless you know about that link, you can't have what's yours any more unless you send in more money because "we've" decided to bloat the app another 50% (now 1.4MB for a calendar!) - pay it or get lost. Well, I will not be a FORCED "early adopter" (or late for that matter) of a bloated, buggy piece of crap. They can "adopt this." They've P.O.'d the wrong Republican Brit.

6.14 is still available for download from that obsolete link page. Burn your Archive/Backup files today and make sure you have your code. If V6 works for you - by God keep it -- and save almost ONE MEGABYTE of memory on your T1. If they were going to charge YOU $9.95 for an upgrade, then that further makes my argument . . . they're charging you the same for 2 years lag as they are us for 3 weeks lag. It's preposterous and crooked, and I'm just gettin' warmed up, believe me (although I won't rant too much more on THIS PARTICULAR forum; there are others to be "alerted").

Cheers.

And I still continue to chug away with DateBk5. Totally reliable and any significant problems are usually fixed within 24 hours. Moose, I know what you mean by no significant upgrades in the past two years but there have been many upgrades to the problem, most of them "under the hood", where the user doesn't see them, but they make the program work reliably. CESD is coming out with a new look version in the next several months. Unlike Iambic, it won't be a beta version that I have to buy but something that will generally work with bugs solved quickly. All of the new ideas in Agendus are fine but what use are they of the don't work or don't work consistently?

As a final point, look at the general tone of posts at the Agendus forum and then look at the same thing at the DateBk5 Yahoo Group. There are people in the Agendus forum that sound like they'd stangle someone at Iambic if they could get their hands on them. In addition, many of the posts that are reporting glaring and critical bugs either never get answerd by Iambic or the users are told they'll fix the problem in the next update, when they'll want you shell out another $9.95 to get a bug fix version. By contrast, CESD answers user's questions almost daily and, since he _IS_the only programmer of DateBk5, he usually knows the exact answer to the problem. It seems as if the Iambic moderators just serve as a pipeline back to the development team with very little understanding of how the program works.

I use my Clie as part of my business and the data is vital to me being able to bill clients. I have neither the time nor inclination to serve as an unpaid - indeed, pay for the privlege - beta tester for Iambic.

I know this won't change anyone's views on the Agendus vs DateBk5 debate. There is one inescapable fact between the two programs, however. One seems to be in a perpetual beta test state while the other is already, and will remain, a stable if not glitzy program.

I tend to agree.

There are vastly different entities at Iambic then compared to CESD. Being the soul programmer and not "upgrading" the product on the front end but working under the hood does make life a little easier.

Agendus is an evolving program whereas I called DB5 stable but virtually unchanged.

I must also say that Iambic is not as responsive as they should be especially to the Early Adopters that have new OS problems.

And if DB5 comes out with a DB6 or some other solution that is CESD's typical solid product....it would be worth a look.

Yet, you have to agree that part of the problem is that Agendus or Iambic is trying to write code to a device that has recently been released without the aid of a software emulator. Palmone has created part of the problem because they only release devices to "web writers" early and no longer use a true mix of beta testers.

It used to be that when they were one company.....P1 and PalmSource they would release an emulator to the developers prior to the hardware release so that the products could be ready before the device release or closely thereafter. That did not occur, apparently, in this case since both of them had to release after they got devices in their hands.

I like Agendus because iambic has progressed the product in a manner that I prefer. DB5 hasn't and CESD, although, he has listened to my posts from over 2 years ago, hasn't modified the product to suit my needs. I look forward to any tweaks that he's planning.

He's made a choice to develop a solid program that has created many loyal user's but is lacking in bells and whistles...that's fine.

The bashing going on over at Iambic is mostly related to new devices or Early Adopters......but Iambic does need to respond and fix these issues or they will continue to lose valuable assets which might include me.

My recent re-test of DB5 prior to the beta will keep me using Agendus but only or until something better comes along. I'll trade off some stability (which DB5 truely provides) for the functionality that Agendus provides.

I'll continue to monitor the DB5 Yahoo group to see when the new version/look comes out.

Don't get me wrong....I agree that Iambic hasn't done a good job of providing a stable program and they have issues with billing or charging for upgrades. It's just that I haven't had a failure of some of those described on their forum.

There are several user's who've voiced similar opinions to mine but unfortunately there are too many who are having problems and Iambic needs to take care of the customer in a fashion similar to CESD, agreed?

Did an interesting little test.

I took the Agendus Icon Set, looked at it in IconManager 1.6b (new build out couple of weeks ago). It allows you to remove objects that aren't icons. I have 97 Agendus icons - but IconManager read 100 (and no little "silver balls, I mean hidden symbols altogether). I opted to remove them, and renumbered all in order starting at "1." Don't let IconManager set numbering for you as "low aspossible," or it will start with "0" and Agendus will bump the number.

Why tell you all this? Because the number it bumps it to is 255. Datebk5 can't handle more than 255 icons. Funny it should pick 255. After stripping "non icon symbols," IconManager showed Agendus as having 97 icons - great. I ran Agendus, then looked again . . . the number went up to 100 again.

It is Agendus that's putting funny codes in the icon sets, and this is why I had the icon crash in Datebk5.

Now Mooseman has an EXCELLENT "pollution point" on the old "@@@s" coming out of your ears in notes sections; however if Datebk "6" is along soon I'll strongly consider looking at it.
All we have to remember is run your icon set through IconManager 1.6b (still freeware), STRIP ALL NON ICON SYMBOLS, possibly renumber, and make sure that TOTAL ICONS or ANY INDIVIDUAL ICON NUMBER does not exceed 255.

Jim put it best in the very quote that Mooseman bracketed. Doesn't get any simpler or more direct. I've done a lot of "8.06 tweaking" this week and especially this morning and it's "chugging along too;" in fact it's just terrific. that's good . . . I won't be switching to V9 and I certainly won't be treated as chaff when I've sent a lot of money, often, for a long time to "that outfit."

T5 simulators were available 11/22 . . . they could have just waited and spent time, ohh, I don't know . . . perhaps on 8.07??!! No - they wanted the cashgrab, and I think it's SERIOUSLY bitten them in the . . . . matrix.

Further to Jim's comment about forum users wanting to strangle someone, I suddenly imagined Pacino (as Scarface) as an Agendus 9 user!!:

"I told you! I told you! Don't tell me I can strike an entry in the matrix, Mannng! I told you! I don't want no stinkin' pie charts of to-dos!! Well you stupid **** . . . . look at you now."

OK, what the hell . . . I love being in "Mooseman Calendar Restore Hell," so I thought I'd put a bunch of drivel in MY CALENDAR DB too . . . but only AFTER copying it to the SD Card (tasks/calendar db) for a "virgin copy" should I need to just delete the "DateBk5 influenced" tasks and calendar databases entirely.

Here's a quick observation and some hints if you're an Agendus user and want to "venture over" to experiment with DB5:

1. DateBk 5 syncs well with Life Balance, Bonsai & DayNotes, among (I'm sure) others. Agendus isn't so "friendly."

2. I also like the fact you can export things to Memo pad, and it gives you a "Purge Report." DateBk5 also found completed to-dos I had deleted from earlier in the day when I was "icon set expermenting." Quite impressive.

3. It will hilite font and background colors but I'm only doing so on THREE events so far, coded with "DB5" so I can find them. I imagine "templates" are for setting those font color/background settings ahead of time but I haven't messed with that yet.

4. BEFORE DELETING, I will open up the stock Tasks/Calendar Palm apps, go to notes, find the "strange text" and HILITE AND ERASE IT. Then ERASE THE MEMO. THEN and only then DELETE THE WHOLE "TEST" TO-DO.

5. If the templates DO NOT handle font color, and each one (apparently) has to be assigned an icon SEPARATELY, I can see DB5 being a real PAIN in terms of quick to-do/meeting entries. With Vivid Agenda, Templates and MakeSpot working in Agendus, it's almost effortless. I'm sure you DB5 fans out there know some shortcuts but the for life of me I can't get icons to show up in the month view despite "show small icons" is checked.

6. So far the "strange text" looks like this:
Entry1: [--.99:99qs000....}
Entry2: [--.99:99js000....]

I haven't seen any "@@@s yet," but I'm sure they'll pop up too. Again, I'm keeping track of what I "alter" and will assign no more than 3 test events and 3 "converted events" already in the calendar for testing purposes. All in all it seems like a powerful little app . . . it just doesn't have the "snap and look and feel" of Agendus but I'm sure it can be "tweaked" as I get to know it.

So far I haven't had a gorilla knocking on the door for a $9.95 upgrade . . . and I've had the trial a whole hour!!

Paul,

Do a search for @ and see if it shows some in your DB5 or anywhere else that they don't belong and then open the "occurence" and you may not see them.

I had a couple of these "ghosts" that caused a note field to be applied to the task or calendar even but they were not in the note. Deleting the note fixed the issue but in all but one case the note was apparently blank.

So I ask, how can a Palm search return a hit when there isn't a @?

FindHack, My Good Man . . . FindHack. Florent Pillet/Wanadoo; Version 4.0.6 - will find a "comma" in the middle of the Sahara. Awesome app. Not a hack anymore, either . . . full fledged OS5 compatible.

OH SH**!!!! I just did a search for "@@" and I got:

Exact text, no quotes, just the raw characters:

##@@A@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Under an entry I hadn't even messed with!!

Total of 12 entries I hadn't even touched . . . this is a NIGHTMARE.

Mostly repeating events like birthdays or Electric bill due or "replace batteries in" stuff . . .

WOW. Once again the white charger has ridden out of the sunset . . . . The Mooseman is among us. Jesus that's annoying (the crappy hieroglyphics, not you!)

Well God knows how many of these there are - you're right, they're "ghosts" as far as Agendus is concerned; only prayer is to look at them under the native Task/Calendar app . . . one was a repeater set for January of next year. In essence, then -- that was a "ghost" too . . . because it didn't appear on ALL repeating events - just one month. W E I R D, Dude!!

Even worse, it puts the garbage in AHEAD OF THE "AN ICON#" text of Agendus, very top line. Guess it's time for that "database restore" from the SD Card. DB5's outta here -- BUT, if you weren't using Agendus and only were using DB5, would the "scrawl" still hurt you? Still cause corruptions? I think perhaps not, or else everyone would have corrupted calendar/task databases. For me though, it's no good 'cause A) I'm still using "the other one" and B) I like my el stuffo el neato.

Man alive, you just CAN NOT rebel against these "Horrendous" weasels, can you? Talk bout the "short hairs . . . . ."
