Aftermarket pipe for S40?

Hey All,

Does anyone have any experience with an aftermarket exhaust pipe (I feel funny just saying "pipe"!)

Just wondering what's out there or if it's even worth it.

Thanks.

Jardine makes a slip-on for S40/savage 650, some people put HD883 stock exhaust on them, they say it's an improvement and you can get them from any Harley dealer for next to nothing.

not the exhaust it is about $400-500
just get a sportster muffler or screamin eagle in the 1 3/4 pipe size you can find on ebay i bought my for $42 a clamp for$4 and jets for carb for $2.50x2

So you all are saying that an 883 Sportster's exhaust pipe (I'm assuming the front cylinder's) will bolt up to an S40? Is the mounting flange the same, or does it require machining? What about mounting/support points? I'm incredulous....:)

I'm sorry, I was unclear, it's only the muffler off of a 883. I've had the muffler off of my S40 many times, just loosen the clamp at the front and remove the two nuts where the muffler attaches to the bracket, also if I remember correctly you may have to loosen the bolts at the head pipe. There is a web site dedicated to the Suzuki savage and it is explained there in detail how to mount the 883 muffler on the S40.

Thanks L&S, I was out there in the garage last night looking at the S40's muffler and I now see how HUGE it is. It doesn't look like it'll be all that hard to unbolt it, so...to my next question:

If you take the stock muffler off and bolt on an 883's muffler/pipe, what kind of sound (obnoxious-wise) are we talking? Like, really loud, or just a little more throaty? What about power? And the backfire on decel, better or worse?

I guess what I'm asking is, "Is it worth doing? What do you get out of it in the end? And What about re-jetting the carb?"

I know, that was more than one question...

Google Suzuki Savage, there's a site there that will have a step by step photo of the install and comments about results. It will be under tech issues, sportster muffler swap. My understanding is that it's not going to much louder than stock, just throatier. If you want loud you'll need a super trap or a jardine but they will require rejetting.

the super trapp is not that loud.i did a screamin eagle muffler only. it is loud and sounds awsome. you have to rejet to 152.5 mainjet and 55 pilot for the backfire issue. there is a site that will tell you about the muffler swap and a good article on the backfire issue at savage.com

These can hopefully help give you an idea of what to expect. Please note that these are recorded by different people with different equipment, so it's not necessarily an "apples-to-apples" comparison.
