After ww2 were there jeeps for sale at 50 $ a piece?

They were said to be left over from the gearing up to invade Japan, but the 'bomb' changed all that tactic. They were then packed in cosmoline to preserve them.
 
these were adds at the back of comic books, along with x-ray glasses and sea monkeys.I don't know anyone who actually bought one.
 
One of the 4x4 magazines did an article on this quite a few years ago. from what I remember there were no $50.00 dollar jeeps ever found complete. What you got for your $50.00 was a body shell in a crate but you still needed all of the other parts to go into it. A lot of the bodies were even missing parts as they would open the crates and take parts out of them. It's nice to see the rumor still going around though.
