after shoulder surgery related or not

I had shoulder surgery because i had bursitis. After surgery i went to physical therapy for 3 1/2 months and still have less movement in my are they before the surgery. The pain I have is much less now. Right after the surgery i had this terrible pain in my wrist and tingling in my thumb if it was touched a certain way. The pain lasted about 3 months and then subsided. Now i have this new symptom and i am not sure if it is related. I feel a tingling in my shoulder and can actually feel it traveling down my arm when it reaches my fingers my fingers curl up and i cannot straighten them out when i am getting feeling back in my fingers start shaken back and forth uncontrollably. It is the worst feeling and i need some advice where to start because i have no health insurance. Could this be nerve damage or someone said it sounded like Parkinson

depending upon what actual symptoms were there pre op,you could also have some level of actual c spine involvement in your neck(any neck pain?) as well as the shoulder problems too. thats what i have. it made it hard to really define what was shoulder related and what was from my c spine mess at certain times. what you are describing really sounds more c spine related with nerve compromise than from having surgery for bursitis(what was actually done to that shoulder during surgery?). this may very well have been generating symptoms that were just "assumed' to be from the shoulder since the nerves that run from the c spine DO also run thru the upper shoulder and down your arm,and to your fingers too. just what specific fingers are being affected when that numbness occurs along with the spasms? knowing what fingers are being affected would be able to track it back to a specific nerve involvement.

without really being able to obtain an MRI becasue of your ins situation,i really am not too certain what options you have here. i would contact your surgeons office tho and speak with him and see what he thinks about this. you DO appear to have nerve compromise somewhere between the c spine and the wrist area, like i mentioned already,an MRI really is the best way to find out where this is actually coming from. did your surgeon actually do a surgery on your shoulder 'just' for bursitis? or did you have other problems there too? i have had bursitis before, many years before my rotator cuff surgery was needed(last year) and it went away all by itself with having it put in a sling for awhile to just "rest" it along with just using moist heat and advil to bring the inflammation down. thats what bursitis is,inflammation of the bursa in the shoulder joint. or was yours a type of really chronic situation?

knowing what fingers are being affected would really help to figure out what nerve is being compromised here. were you having this symptom AT ALL pre op or did this just only occur post op? what were your EXACT pre op symptoms? FB

my symptoms before were frozen shoulder and alot of pain, I could not lift my arm except straight out, i had severe pain when trying to put a seat belt on, pulling the blanket up and any fast movement would send me to my knees in pain. I had no pain in my fingers or lower arm. I went to pt before surgery which did not help, got shots that lasted 2 weeks most. I originally thought that my lower are pain after surgery was from the block i had during surgery because i had so much pain in between my neck and shoulder where i got the shot. My fingers never went numb nor did they shake the fingers effected are my pinkey to my middle finger but when it shakes its all my fingers like waving up and down. Can you hurt your neck during surgery? My doctor is like impossable to get on the phone. And he was the one that said they would go in and chip the calsium deposits and i should be as good as new and could move my arm when ever i felt, which led me to believe this would be a piece of cake. When the block finally wore off a day and a half afterwoods i was beside myself my arm could not move at all not even an inch. Anything you can tell me i would greatly appriciate. Is there something that can be done with a compressed nerve. Oh yeah i have not had pain like before since, cant move just the same just striaght out but latley i feel a dull pain or pinch where he made the middle insision on my outer arm.

every surgeon has a trusty 'sidekick'. it could be a PA or NP but they always have one or the other who is who they rely on for the more minor stuff and who you sometimes see when you go for the appt follow uups or they are the ones who do call backs for the surgeon? this is the person you need to cotact at the surgeons office and let know about your ongoing symptoms. it does sound like you had alot more than just bursitis going on in there. the strange thing about your case is when i asked my ortho(and believe me i do have one of the very best) about any actual finger involvement due to the shoulder problems i had, he told me that more than likely it was my c spine problems that was causing it. it all kind of depends upon just what is actually wrong with your shoulder to begin with as to what will actually show up as symptoms. it just really does sound like you suffered some level of actual nerve compromise somewhere up there, either in your shoulder post op or during that surgery or like i mentioned that c spine area. i seriously doubt you suffered any real neck damage just from that scalene block they did,i had the same thing. i would think the ONLY real way that could happen would be if that anesthesiologist who did your scalene block somehow some way, actually hit your ulnar nerve during that block, which would be almost an impossability i would think anyways. one thing you can do here is simply do a bit of research on 'scalene nerve block" and see where they actually place it with regards to that neck/c spine area. all i can remeber is it went into the side. this would at least give you an idea of the area involved, you know what i mean?

your symptoms sound like the major part is actually affecting your ulnar nerve which would also be the c 8 nerve up in your c spine. i suffered ulnar damage from my spinal cord surgery and my last two(at first it was the same last three fingers but that middle finger came back in a couple weeks)fingers were numb and tingly for the first three years post op. but i also suffered damage to other nerves too, like the median and radial. this would affect the adductor and abductor muscles(fine motor muscles) in your hand/fingers too. i lost that as well, but only in my left hand(hence the great typing here?).

honestly, getting an MRI done on that shoulder again and also including the c spine area i really do think would be your best bet at finding the true source of your problem/area where the nerve is being affected? i know you do not have ins,but really, something just is not right up there from what you described that just NEEDS to be found out. you have direct nerve compromise somewhere from that c spine thru the shouder area given what symptoms you are now displaying. the surgeon who did that surgery really needs to recheck his work he did on you. since you started feeling this post op,he does owe you some help here and possibly he could do that MRI as part of a follow up so you may not have to pay the whole thing ,or some other way you could work it out? it just needs to be found out. you should have regained ROMS in that shoulder post op too if you did follow your post op PT to the letter. something is not right up there if you did do everything you were told to do and you ended up this way,you know what i mean?

the one thing i found with this particular surgery, anything in that shoulder? is the post op excercises and then the hands on PT part of rehab is very very crucial in regaining any ROM again. not like other surgeries i have had where little or no real PT was needed, this one in that shoulder is just very much needed. that shoulder joint is just one of the most moveable in many directions we actually have,so any surgery done on it is just that crucial to fully regain anything back in it. i completely tore that very top tendon nd partially tore the one under it and oh boy was it ever painful. i have had to have six surgeries and one on my spinal cord and the dissipation of that scalene block with the rotator post op was absolute hell for me. it IS one of the most painful surgeries one can have,so i would imagine yours was pretty awful too.

one way or another, you just really do need to find out what is going onup there with that shoulder and any possible c spine involvement too. this surgeon could have(it all depends upon how close he came to certain nerves during surgery)hit that ulnar somehow during your surgery and it would not have shown right away or maybe it did,i am not too certain just what symptoms were there post op for you? but you DO need to see that ortho again for a follow up appt to find out what was done inthere and hopefully he can better define the problem for you. if this was not there pre op,he needs to check it out since he could have caused it during surgery. you just don;t really know ya know? i really do feel for you here with this. i know what its like to suffer post op with really crappy pain and losses after a surgery. you just need to find where that nerve is being compromised at. even obtaining whats called an EMG would help in better finding where its at and i would seriously doubt that it would cost as much as an MRI. this would help to actually narrow down the area with testing up that arm to the c spine area for you. just one other type of test for your symptoms that may show something for you. i do wish you lots of luck with this. please keep me posted. Just wanted to say thank you for all the information you gave me a while ago. Also, wanted to let you know I never did follow up with a doctor because of no health insurance. I believe I do have a pinched nerve in my neck that only bothers me once in a while. just a pinching in the back of my neck is i am sitting wrong or stressed. All other symptoms have gone away. I believe that if I am careful they will not come back. My shoulder is also great. After many months of pysical theropy I now have I would say 99% of my movement back but the best of all is no pain.. Once again thanks for all your info. I just posted another post but this is not for me but for my husband..Neck also. If you have any imput I would appreciate it. Yvonne

glad to hear things sound soo much better for you. believe me,i KNOW how nasty any shoulder issues can be.

just where did you place that other post? just a suggetion for you when it comes to the neck/ cspine area? go sown to the spinal boards way down at the bottm here in the "Ss"? ther have some really knowledgable and really helpful people down there. i post there too. you may get alot more precice answers to any of your questions there as opposed to here. just a suggestion for the best possible info. again, i really am glad things are better for you. thanks for letting me know too.
