One of the popular catch phrases to come out the Black consciousness movements of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s is the declaration that “We come from a long line of kings and queens.” At face value this is statement inherently wrong because obviously not everyone is descended from royalty. But how it does serve to begin to counter the process of dehumanization that is the legacy of 400 years of racist experience in African American culture?
