AFI's 100 Top Movie Quotes (June 2005)

Well, at least this list has convinced me to finally watch Marathon Man. "Is it safe?" does deserve to be there.

I agree with cheerios and jthorton. I thought for sure it would be in the top 10. At least another SW quote was in the top 10. SW has a lot of good quotes.

Awesome icons, physicsgeek :D

Agreed, I thought that was probably one fo the most repeated/make fun of quotes ever made in a movie.

I did think is was strange that they didn't have, "No, I am your father," from Star Wars.

For anyone who's interested... I made about 17 icons inspired by some of the movie quotes on the list. They're posted at my icon journal warmrain_icons.

Direct Link here. Obey and Respect the rule please. ^_^

Okay, let me just get this out before I blow -- Love Story?! Love Story is at number 13, but Dr. Strangelove is only at 64. Meh... I also do wish they took something from movies like His Girl Friday and such.

I liked this list, I think they did a great job of picking them actually. I didn't know if some lesser known movies would be shafted, but they weren't they did a pretty good job of staying fair to all contestants.

One of my favorites is..

46. "Oh, Jerry, don't let's ask for the moon. We have the stars," "Now, Voyager," 1942. :)
I also like the little lighting the two cigarettes thing that goes with it.

But my absolute favorite line, not on the list, is from a Mae West film..

Hat check girl "Goodness! Diamonds!"

Mae Wests character "Goodness had nothing to do with it honey."

And I almost forgot, I adore

"Fire! Fire! Cat?" from Pleasantville :D

but as I have just read the first post, umm please ignore the last two :thud:

Alarmingly enough "Why is the rum gone?" (POTC),
"I am Jack's smirking revenge" (Fight Club),
"On my signal, unleash hell" (Gladiator),
"What's in the box?" (SEVEN),
"So, what are we doing for New Year's?" (GO),
"I can't believe it... They *****ing forgot my birthday." (Sixteen Candles),
"This, this is not real. You know what this is? It's St. Elmo's Fire." (St. Elmo's Fire),
"You want me to stop, Pearl?" (A walk on the moon),
"Why are you all wearing green?" (I capture the castle) yeah, foreign movie I know,
"See anything you like?" (Face/Off),
"The things I'm gonna do for my country..." (XxX),
"What do you mean everybody?"
"E-V-E-R-Y-B-O-D-Y!" (The Professional),
"Who do you think you are? Superman?" (Spider-Man),
I'll apologize for anything but today. Today I give a *****! (Life as a house),
Today we celebrate our Independence day! (Independence Day), and
"What's more American than that?" (CLUE) didn't make AFI's top 100 quotes. ;)

I taped the show, it was very cool. I wasn't surprised by the #1 choice of course.

---

How cool that "nobody puts Baby in a corner" made it! I would've swapped #2 and #3. Anyway, that list is very nice and I though there are a lot of quotes from movies I haven't seen, I don't have major disagreements. :)

roswellcharmed_2000 is right on. It's a scene from "Pirates of the Caribbean" when the character of Elizabeth goes underwater with the pirate medallion at the center of the movie's plot.

When she gets rescued, Jack, a pirate, asks her "where did you get that?"

My God, and here I was thinking everybody and their mother had seen "POTC".

its the pirates medallian from pirates of the caribbean. its elizabeth's chest, aka kiera kneightly.

I thought they were running out of ideas for AFI lists but I guess not. I actually like it. I love those programs and I'm realy going to enjoy this one. Those five quotes listed are some of the most universally known quotes ever. People don't even know what movie they come from half the time.

I'll bet "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!" will be on there.

I don't see how they'll find quotes from Ninotchka and Goodbye, Mr. Chips though. I love the first movie and liked the second but they're not very quotable films.

I think there should be some Austin Powers 2 quotes in there. That movie is quoted SOOOO much in my family and with my friends.

Too bad they can't put any silent movies on the list. I think the silents have been badly presented in the AFi list.

yep have a while to wait, but seems like there will be some oppurtunities to have some great quotes on the list, but I bet few will be missed, but thats ok.
