Advise: Should I go for the S4RS Tricolore or the 848?

it sounds like you already have a convincing argument for the S4RS Tri so go with with your gut. none of us here are going to be able to tell you what bike to get when you already know the one that best suites what you will use it for.
 
Great advise. I totally agree. Go with your gut/heart. If you love the S4RS and think that it will really do better for you, get it. Sure, it won't be as aggressive in the canyons as the 848, but I can tell you from personal experience, a Monster is a far superior commuting vehicle than an 848......I'm dealing with that right now!

As a side story, my wife just went through this kind of debate. She is a relatively new rider, and thought she wanted a more upright riding position, and the superior wind protection of the Multistrada. After seeing the new 696 in white pearl though, she began to have doubts. Finally decided her heart was saying Monster, and her head was saying Multi.....went with her heart.....more excited about her new bike than I can ever remember her being.....which will be totally key to getting her our on it when it shows up!

848........near the same power to weight ratio, better handling, more comfortable at speed not to mention newer/better technology and fewer service intervals......seems simple to me.
 
All of the bikes mentioned, including the multi are great machines. My advice would be to hold off for few months to see what shananigans ducati is planning for the new monster line. I'm sure that a very serious older sibling to the 696 can't be far off. I have a 1098R and picked up a 696 for more relaxed, frequent use. If not for the 1098 the 696's lack of power, whimpy clutch etc would drive me nuts. As a pair they are great. If I was up for one all around bike at this point I'd be looking ahead into the monster line. That said the S4 TRI is a stunning bike.
 
I would get the S4RS. Your ass will get pounded on the 848. I know a had 2 S4RS's and a 848. Hands down get the monster.
