advice on phone possibilities (current and upcoming)

Hi all... I'm a Verizon customer and will likely stay with Big Red for coverage reasons (and we are on a share plan... so it'll be a while before we can switch if we wanted to).

I'm really wanting to move to an Android phone, but don't know what to go for. I've read about the Droid X and Droid Incredible (and the Droid 2). I like a physical keyboard (I've been a Blackberry person). But I think I can get used to not having one. From initial specs, the Droid 2 doesn't look as powerful as the X or Incredible... is that right?

Also, I seem to recall one of the cell makers claiming at CES (or was it MWC) that they'd have a 2ghz phone by the end of 2010. Maybe that's just posturing... But on the horizon, (please correct me if I'm wrong), I see possibly at the end of the year (holiday releases) much more powerful phones, and some time next year 4G.

Now, I'm not willing to wait out 4G. But does it seem likely that at the end of the year, there's gonna be something that blows the Droid X or Incredible out of the water?

I suppose this is all guessing, but some of you have been around this thing long enough to start having better guesses than me.

first, theres always going to be a better phone coming out. for now the best verizon phone will be either the droid x or verizons version of the samsung galaxy.

The Droid X and Incredible should hold their own for 2 years until you're ready for an upgrade. As long as the CPU is 1ghz or higher, you're golden for the future.

4G performance isn't that much greater than 3G (or similar), so don't wait for that to happen. There are still big leaps in technology that has to be made for that to work perfectly.

As far as 2ghz CPU's go, they'll be dual-core based. They're nice for heavy processing, but the 1ghz processors are more than plenty for the next couple years. How much heavy processing will your phone be doing? A decent GPU is probably more of an important factor than a larger CPU. That's why I like the combination of specs for the Samsung Galaxy S, but hate the skinned version of Android (1ghz + a nice gpu).

4g is going to be launching in major cities for Verizon at the end of 2010. The big rollout will be 2011. Lye is not as good as tmobiles hspa+which is already launched and is giving me 3-4 megabit speeds in Seattle and the aurounding areas.
That being said I'd ho with incredible. Droid x is fat and has a wonky lip.4.3 is too big foreveruday use in my opinion.Samsung galaxy has no led ash and the Samsung Ui over android looks unattractive to me.

Droid 2 would be a good option if you want a keyboard but the keyboard is not very good. If you install smart keyboard for 3 bucks the virtual keyboard is fine. It takes a while to get used to it but is fine once you get the hang of it.

do the X, Incredible or Galaxy S all have separate GPUs? Also, I understand that the Samsung skin is... unappealing. can that be easily changed with app installs? or are you pretty much stuck with the UI skin provided by the manufacturer?

The Droid X has the same GPU as the original Droid, which is better then the one used in Snapdragon phones like the Incredible. So, the Droid X has a better GPU, however it's offset a bit by the amount of calculations it has to do for such a large screen. So the performance should be pretty close between the Incredible and Droid X I would think.

Skins to a degree can be changed, or if you root then you can completely change everything

So if I don't mind the lack of led flash... and am willing to bear (or root and change) the UI, it sounds like the Galaxy S may perform better than the two droids?

I'm assuming the galaxy s wait won't be terribly long.
