Advice on games consoles please...?

I used to play video games about 12 years ago (i had an N64) and i want to get back into it but i'm not sure which console to buy. I heard the XBox 360 is good but has a high breakdown rate, i also heard the PS3 is more reliable but doesn't have the best games released for it. Can anyone advise me? What would be the best long-term bet?
 
the xbox is good with shooting games but it has the red ring virus and you have to buy xbox live cards

the ps3 has free online no crash no virus but not many releases
