If you are going to ride that much, I would suggest a road bike. You can buy a decent one for about $600 to $1,500 on the low end to $5,000 to $20,000 on the high end.
If you are going to carry lots of gear, like say more than 30 pounds, go for a touring bike, which will cost about the same, but typically has stronger brakes, fatter tires, more durable wheels and frame and higher seating position.
If you are traversing unpaved roads, you may want to consider knobby tires an easy upgrade that usually does not cost anything.
Jamis, Bianchi, Trek, Speicalized, KHS all make bikes in these categories that you can choose from.
Chat up the guy or gal at the local bike shop and I am sure you can find a bike that will fit your needs.
Also budget in a couple hundred more for some extra gear, like clothes- at minimum you'll need padded shorts-bags, lights, reflective gear, helmet, gloves, bottles, bottle cages, spare tubes, patch kit and repair tools (my recommendation for tools are these: mini pump, Pedros 6-pack chain tool, 3,4,6 mm allen wrenches with short handles, a tire lever and a rubber band to hold it all together-this will solve 98 percent of road side repairs).
Keep it in the big ring.
