Adults with acne?

girlygal,
I never broke out from accutane ever. My skin oils stopped, which I loved and all of the oil in the pores just dried up and I looked like I had black dots in each pore, especially on my nose. My lips were really dry and the only product that worked for me was the medicated blistex. My skin was normal looking on accutane, just dry lips and eyes. Stop using all acne products. I just washed my face with Cetephil. I would get paranoid about hair loss. I didn`t think that I lost any, I just became paranoid. My hair is fine to begin with. I guess I just traded one obsession for another. LOL. I was pleased with the results but the acne always comes back. Do your best and try and give accutane a try, keep close tabs with your doctor and hopefully it will bring some relief to you. Best of luck.

Crossbow,
It takes at least 6-8 weeks for results. For everyone, I picked up a really good book on a womans guide to acne at any age. Either borrow it from the library or better yet buy it. It is only $13.00 U.S and for me $19.00 Canadian. It is excellent. It is called Breaking Out, A woman's guide to coping with acne at any age. By Lydia Preston. Tons of info. And remeraber knowledge is power.

Thanks. I just added it to my Amazon wish list.

And while we're talking about books, the best one I've found so far is "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Beautiful Skin," which is by a dermatologist and covers a lot of stuff besides acne, like aging and makeup.

That does sound painful. My best friend gets that kind of acne. She uses this masque that she says helps a lot - I'll have to look it up.

ETA: It's Got2B Spa Face De-stress Facial Mask. You can get it at Target.

I'm glad you found something that worked. I always take vitamins. I'm not sure if they affect my skin, but they give me more energy. I take a multivitamin with zinc.

Update on me: For two days I've been using a benzoyl peroxide cleanser in the morning and salicylic acid cleanser in the evening and an alpha hydroxy cream at night. I know it's too early to actually be seeing results, but I FEEL a lot better about my skin right now, and there have been no new pimples.

OMG, LitaMS! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RECOMMENDING THAT BOOK! I just got this in the mail today, and I'm nearly halfway though. It covers a lot of the things that were in the "Idiots" book, but in a lot more detail. (That was a book on general skin care, not just acne.) Not only have I already learned a lot about why my acne treatments haven't been working, I've learned a lot that applies to this whole message board. Everyone should read this.

For one thing, I knew there were other things that looked like acne but weren't really, but the only one I could name was Rosacea. Now, having read this, I can see that LOT of people on this board do not actually have acne but something else. This could really save a lot of people time, money, and sanity.

I did the antibiotic thing too - six months of Erythromicin (sp?). Plus I've been on antibiotics for 5 cases of strep throat and various infections (I trap feral cats; I'm always in with some infected scrape or scratch or bite). Only Augmentin has ever affected my skin.

One thing I don't think I've tried is using both Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid together. I'm trying that starting today. BO in the morning and SA at night. We'll see if that works.

I will also look into the Milk of Magnesium mask idea.

I am also 37 and the only thing that is working for me (knock on wood) is changing my eating habits. Perricone's book, The Acne Presciption, has changed my life. Some people think he's a quack, but by changing the way I eat, my skin is clearing up so much.

I have textbook hormonal acne- chin, jaw, mouth, around nose- cheeks and forehead clear.

I recommend at least checking it out of the library like I did. I don't follow it exactly, but I eat a lot of the fooRAB he recommenRAB, and stay away from the ones that trigger acne. I still have my morning coffee, but also drink green tea and at least 10 glasses water a day. I'm eating a lot of the fruits and veggies he recommenRAB, when in the past I would just opt for junk. I can't believe how much my skin has cleared in less than 2 weeks.

I am a 34 year old female. I have had two courses of Accutane, with the last course being about five years ago. The Accutane seems to have cured me of the big cyst-like pimples and back acne. However, my current and ongoing problem is that I have whiteheaRAB all over. They don't even come to a head, they just spread out under the skin and swell a little. I am also a picker! I am so afraid that if I don't squeeze the whiteheaRAB, that I will end up with the painful red cysts again. I make myself look so much worse sometimes because of the picking. I take Yasmin, and I use Zoderm cleanser (a prescription benzoil peroxide wash), and Paula's Choice 2% salicylic acid topical beta hydroxy acid. I have tried Proactive in the past with no luck. I tried Murad and had a terrible reaction. I do use the sulfur mask from Proactiv occasionally. I have tried antibiotics, but usually end up with mild colitis and vaginal yeast infections, which causes me to quit taking them. I have used Differin gel, Benza-clin, and Duac. You name it, I've probably used it. I recently sent for free samples of the Affirm make-up which is supposed to HELP your skin breath, not just be non-comedogenic. We'll see. I really don't think wearing make-up affects anything, I still get blemishes even when I try to just wear powder. I am a Christian so I have prayed about this. I continue to have the acne, so I guess there is a reason why. It must just be my cross to bear.

I know you've tried many products but this one is definitely worth a shot, I use it, it's called BioClear, it's by Jan Marini Skin Research, it may be hard to find but check their website. The product has Glycolic Acid, Azaelic Acid and Salyicilic Acid. Also I would suggest getting facial peels at a derm's office. I have been using oral contraceptives (Estrostep FE), it's supposed to help with acne. It was helping me for quite some time but now the acne is once again appearing all over my back. It's quite frustrating! Hang in there. I'm a medical aesthetician(skin care professional) so if you have any other questions, I would be more than happy to help. Goodluck.

Crossbow,
I am so happy. I told you that knowledge is power. I swear I could be a doctor specializing in acne, since I have been reading about acne for about 20 years. The more you know about acne, the better you can work with a doctor to help yourself. Best of luck.

Lori, I'm training to be an Aesthetican, but how did you become a medical aesthetician? What did you have to go to school for after the training?
