Seriousperson,
Did you have any side effects from spironolactone(brand name Aldactone)?
Spironlactone is a testosterone hormone blocking drug to reduce oil production in the skin. It is also a diuretic.

I just turned 33. I never had any acne as a teenager, but it seems like ever since i turned 30 i have breadouts. They are mostly in the same areas, my left cheek, and chin. I dont think i would call it acne, but i definitly have break outs. I wonder why it started in my 30's? Any ideas?

I started a thread like this some months ago, but I can't find it.

Any other adults here with acne problems? What's worked for you?

I'm 37. When I turned 19 I started birth contorl pills, and those helped a lot, but in the past few years it's been worse again. The only thing that's REALLY worked was the antibiotic Augmentin, but you can't take that long term.

The following have not worked:

Benzoyl peroxide
Salicylic Acid
Retinol
Alpha-Hydroxy acid
"Cetaphil" (which is just a plain old detergent, BTW)
Tea Tree Oil
Antibacterial soap

Mud and clay masques seem to help. Or at least they make me feel better. My favorite is the Mint Julep masque by Queen Helene, but almost anything seems to help at least somewhat.

The Biore brand nose strips don't improve the appearance of the skin, but I've noticed that after I use them, my nose is a lot oilier, which means it is definitely unclogging pores, even if you can't tell. The other brand names/generic branRAB don't work at all.

I haven't tried this Proactiv stuff, but it's basically just bensoyl peroxide and an alcohol toner. I'm guessing waste of money if benzoyl peroxide hasn't worked for me before. I'm also heard it has really bad drying effects in adults.

i started takin lecithin granules and my skin totally improved. my mother was taking them aswell, an noticed a total diffrence. they help break down fats, which helps the liver, which helps our skin. its not expencive

What kinRAB of fooRAB did you cut out?

Fedupwithit -
I don't think that whiteheaRAB can turn into cysts.
Have you tried alpha hydroxy? That's what my doctor recommended. It hasn't done much for my acne, but for a few months I had this rash of bumps behind my ears and on my neck (like pimples but there were too many and they were too close together - sounRAB like what you have, I think) and the alpha hydroxy cleared that up.

I cut out bread, except for the occasional burger or whole wheat toast. I used to have it every day. I cut out milk/dairy except for a splash in my coffee in the morning. My biggest change was the cuting out the junk food. I have a huge sweet tooth, and since my weight wasn't too much of an issue (Ok I've had 4 kiRAB, so I had maybe 10 lbs. to lose,) I would have candy/cakes, ice cream, nachos. SOMETHING junky every day! No more pasta either.

Although I'm saying cut out, I guess I really mean cut down drastically. I love pasta, but I'll have it once every 2 weeks, instead of a couple times a week. The same with pizza, sweets, etc.

Crossbow. I did find the Proactive drying, but instead of using the cream at night I have been using either jojoba oil or camellia oil and my skin is just perfect now.

No negative side effects for me.* And, as a bonus, its diuretic effect relieved bloating, which had become an issue. It's also supposed to help keep blood pressure down.
And I stopped using topical lotions and gels.
It seems the white "pus" was not really a bacteria-derived substance. It was all in the hormones. (We all knew that all along -- right?)
I've been taking 70mg in the morning for about 2 years.

* However, it cannot be taken if you are pregnant, or at risk for becoming pregnant.

I'm 32 and have had acne since I was a teenager. I started Proactive in January and my face has been perfectly clear since the 6 week mark I did experience an initial clearing followed by a breakout around 3-4 weeks. Then my face totally cleared and has stayed that way. I personally would recomend it. Benzoyl peroxide did not work as well for me in various doses from the derm. I think the corabo of things in Proactive along with me being so diligent with the regimen has helped me tremendously.

Hi,
I just turned 38 and I still suffer with acne. I am going to start Diane 35 and use it for a couple of months then switch to another oral contraceptive and also use aldactone ( a drug that blocks the male hormones that effect the skin). My skin is really oily. I have used accutane a couple of times and it works but the acne comes back. I use all topicals. I use salicylic acid 2% by Paulas choice) then 2.5 % benzoyl peroxide in the morning, then I use the salicylic acid again with either .5 % vitamin A acid or tazorac .5% at night. This all helps but in the past few weeks my skin has been terrible. This is why I am going to try the Diane 35 again.
I totally understand where you are coming from. The more you learn about acne the better. Knowledge is power. Check out cosmeticscop.com. She has lots of info on skin problems. I use Paulas products even though I live in Canada. I have followed her work for years. She is so honest. I love that. You could always try just plain old milk of magnesia facial mask, not the flavoured kind, just plain. It absorbs excess oil and is disinfecting and anti-inflammatory.( it is just liquid magnesium) I find it helps.
I have had acne since I was 16, I took antibiotics for years, then took an oral contraceptive and used benzoyl peroxide to help control it. Then about 4 rounRAB of accutane. My skin has been worse since I have had children and have been off oral contraceptives. So I find they help. I hope that you find help. Learn all you can and you will feel much more in control and active in your future treatment.
Best of Luck, L.

I'm thirty nine and I still break out, too, but not as bad as when I was younger. I think that adult acne in women is often hormonal, which is probably why you haven't had great results with topicals. I think bc helps a lot, but the older you get the more health issues are involved. I had to stop taking bc last year because I had some vision disturbances and the doctor was worried that I was a high stroke risk. I've made some dietary changes and this seems to help a lot, although I'm not %100 perfect yet and neither is my face. ;) I also scheduled a facial at a really good salon (one where they use Aveda products) last month right before my period, because that's when I tend to break out. My face did so much better that I'm going to try and and do it again for the next few months when I'm especially prone for breakouts. It's a HUGE splurge for me (I'm a grad student and a single mom, so I don't have a lot of expendable income) but I think it's worth it to do have a really good exfoliation and get your pores cleared out when you're likely to break out. Also, I've been drinking lemon water every morning.

That sounRAB more like Rosacea. If you develop "acne" as an adult, there's a good cnace it's really Rosacea. You shuld ask your doctor, because the treatment for Rosacea is different and acne treatments won't affect it. It's most common in white women over 30, but it CAN strike anyone at any time, regardless of age, gender, or skin color.

Im 48 and i still breakout in small painful zits, most of the time they dont come to a head and they seem to last forever. They always seem to pop up in the same places where they were previously. When will this madness be over.Take care.

I am 39 and have hormonal acne. I get it two big ones in in two spots every month and a few little ones here and there as well.

I have tried all kinRAB of things as well as accutane (about 15 years ago)..I have not changed my diet since I had gastric bypass surgery. I still eat pretty much whatever I want with emphasis on protien, but I do get two big zits every month in the same place...on on the left and one on the right side of my chin between my mouth and chin. The one on the left is always the worst....bug and ugly.

I'm convinced it's hormonal. I take really good care of my skin so I know it's not from dirt or old makeup. I've resigned to just live with it since it's only two or three zits a month....

Good luck
Angela

Lorid -
thanks - I'll look into BioClear.

Actually I think almost all acne is hormonal. I've know people to get it from allergies and from stress, but it's usually hormones. But I will look into getting a facial one of these days. (But not with Aveda products, because they sting my skin!)

My problem is hormonal, but it's made worse by stress. My skin has never been good, but since I bought my house two years ago, I've been getting father and farther into debt, and bad acne is only one of the many ways it's wreacking havoc with my health.

Thanks seriousperson. I am going to give the Diane 35 a try, then when my doctor changes my oral contraceptive I will try the aldactone with it. What do you mean about the white stuff in your skin being the hormones. My skin is really oily and lately the acne is becoming more cystic. I wish that the accutane ended it, but it is only a temporary remission. Thanks again.

Hi I am 42 and still breaking out I am going to go on accutane in two weeks
litams how was our accutane expierence did you have a bad breakout from accutane before it got better? any info will help thanks

After years of pills, potions, creams, and lotions, when I was in my 40's a dermatologist put me on Spironolactone. It works. No more whiteheaRAB. No more antibiotic pills or lotions.

*Sigh* Well, while my new "regimen" has eliminated all my wrinkles and made my skin feel nice, there's been absolutely no reduction in acne.

Have you asked your doctor about Rosacea? If you can't do that, do a web search on "Rosacea" or visit the national Rosacea society at rosacea.org

I'm 33 (will be 34 in July). I've had acne for about 20 years and have tried numerous antibiotics, creams, gels, and Accutane (3 courses). My acne got bad when I was a teenager and was all over (mainly neck, chest, and back-REAL BAD). My face has always had what I call the "normal breakouts". As I've gotten older (and probably due to Accutane), my skin has gotten better, but I still needed some "help", so I started taking antibiotics again. I've always, always, always, had oily skin, but that has changed in within the past couple months. My skin is now 90% dry, but I still breakout around my period. Yes, those infamous cysts. They show up on my chin and sometimes in my eyebrows!! Yikes!! I finally stopped my antibiotics last year. I've been controlling my acne mainly with diet, and I try not to use any topicals unless it's just absolutely necessary. They seem to make my acne worse. I do use mud masks once a week. My chest, neck, and back acne has cleared up 99% thanks to a corabo of supplements. B-complex (1, twice a day), Zinc (1, 25mg once a day), and saw palmetto (1, 3 times a day 160mg). That corabo has gotten my chest C-L-E-A-R. It hasn't been this clear since I was on Accutane. Right now I'm looking for a good cleanser (preferrably cheap) that is good for dry skin (still got a couple of oily spots). I use jojoba oil for my moisturizer.
