Adjusting Chevy 305 Valve Lash?

I need help adjusting the valve lash on a 1986 chevy c-10. I hear theres a different of adjusting the valve lash depending if it has hydraulic or solid lifter and how do I adjust it.

you have a hydraulic camshaft. so you simply have to turn the engine when its off and tighten the rocker arms that arent under compression. you simply tighten them till theyre snug, and then another 1/4 to 1/2 turn to hold them there. then just turn the crankshaft again to get the rest. basically you dont want to tighten them down while theyre not in their TDC position. or if you want to expedite this. you simply turn the car on without the valve covers on. then loosen the rocker arm till it starts to click, then tighten it till it barely stops clicking, then tighten it another half turn on top of that. the only downside to this method, is that its alittle messy, and if you headers you can start a fire.

you have hydraulic lifters.Take off the valve covers. Turn the engine until the timing mark is at o degrees.Half of the valves will be closed and you can adjust them by backing off the rocker arm nut until you can freely spin the push rod with your fingers.Tighten the rocker arm nut one full turn .Turn the engine until the timing mark is at o degrees again and you can set the rest of your lifters. If you have never done this before then don't sweat it any thing you do will improve idle and throttle response.Buy some new valve cover gaskets-something this old ,adjusting the valves will make a BIG difference. You can do it! Good Luck and Happy Motoring!
