Addressing T5 shortcomings

Well-timed post, since I know the T5 is now officially out of fashion with the release of the TX. I have only recently finished a full-on migration back to PalmOS from an iPaq I got because of TomTom, so before I completely close off my personal project, I thought I'd ask more experienced users of possible solutions on some things.

Screen orientation settings per application
It seems obvious to me that some applications are more useful in one orientation than the other. For example, my KK-12c app, which emulates the legendary HP-12C calculator, is only half as useful in portrait mode as it is in landscape, if you know what I mean. For most other apps, I am familiar with portrait. So why Palm didn't bother making this an app-specific setting, I don't know. Is there 3rd-party software that achieves this?

File associations
I tried opening a big (700~KB) html file from the Files app. It launched Blazer, and Blazer gave up loading the file after a while, then crashed. Immediately I thought of changing the app that handles html to AvantGo, but how? I like the idea of using Files as a launcher, as it's bare-bones and doesn't require a lot of clicks. Is there a similar app I might be recommended? I am using Filez as a file manager at times, and tried UniCmd, which I thought was far too complicated.

Backlight off on idle
I'd like to be able to save battery when I'm running TomTom on my mountain bike. I'd only need voice queues, so the screen might as well turn itself off, or at least be unlighted. Is there anything that does this?

PDF viewing
This seems to be one area where the WinCE world beats PalmOS hands down. With my iPaq, I used to be able to drag a folder full of PDF's (they would typically be PDF printouts from my Mac) onto an SD, then just view them with Acrobat for WinCE, albeit with some discomfort, on the PDA. If I wanted a hard copy I'd plug the SD onto a reader on my Mac, then print. The workflow is so much more complicated with the (really B-class effort that is) Acrobat for Palm. There must be a better way that doesn't involve conversion! (tends to break half my PDF's to begin with!)

I eagerly await your wise advices.

Those are all good ideas. I can only address the PDF question - adobe makes a pdf translator (of PDF docs)/reader for the Palm available at adobe.com. I have used it from the beginning and I found it to be marginal at best (many PDFs are just unreadable). Recently, Documents To Go (latest v8) added a PDF reader, and it is superb. I have not found a PDF file that is not accurately translated and viewed on the Palm (I have a T5). I'm not sure it is worth the upgrade price if you don't use DXTG for anything else, though.

For screen rotation you might try T3Rotate. It was written for the T3 and does what you want. Don't know if it will work on the T5, but might be worth a try. It is a little quirky on the T3. I believe you can find it at palmgear.com

For PDFs try PalmPDF. It is a freeware beta app right now available at: www.metaviewsoft.de It requires no conversion of the document and it is zoomable. I've been using it on my T3 for a few weeks now and it seems to work just fine. It loads docs faster than the native PDF viewer in Docs to Go 8.

Well..... you guys are a little slow replying but anyway....

rkrasny is right about the PDF files. The new DTG is supposed to be quite good at opening native PDF files.

thingdriver, what does that T3Rotate program do?
What iloatheny wanted was something that will automatically roatate the screen for CERTAIN programs only.

T3Rotate allows the user to set a variety of options for screen rotation per program. It will allow you to specify options for each individual program. Those options include landscape or portrait, rotated to either the left or the right, virtual grafitti minimized or expanded, status bar minimized or expanded. These options can be set universally for all apps or individually. The app will also use long presses on the 5-way nav pad to rotate the screen manually whichever direction you want to go.

It was written for the T3 and that's what I use so I'm not sure if it will work on the T5. It might be worth a try. I did have some issues with resets when using the automatic rotate option on some programs. Usually this would happen when exiting the app that was automatically rotated. However, just having the ability to rotate the screen with the nav pad was enough for me rather than having to pull the stylus out and tap the screen.

There are a couple other apps over at palmgear.com that do similar things. Like: RotateDA & MaxT3 1.20 Just do a search on "rotate screen". You can find T3Rotate here: http://www.pdaload.ru/modules.php?n...=352&ttitle=T3Rotate&pid=palm&newlang=english
