It minimizes the production of acid and gives your body a chance to heal. Once you have an area of irritation it often reacts to even the smallest amount of acid by becoming progressively more inflamed. The Prilosec just gives your body's natural healing process (which includes the excess mucus you mentioned) a chance to work.

My question is that I had a single incident of acid reflux which actually burned my throat area. This happened a couple of days ago in the day and now my throat feels swollen and my chest is tight. I am concerned that some of the acid has got into the lungs as some of it did go down the wrong way.

My doctor has told me there no action needed but I am concerned.

Does the inflamation and excess mucous secretion (which I am experiencing) go away soon?

How do I know whether there's any permanent damage? such as scarring of the burn or scarring of the lungs or damage to the cilia?

Thanks,:(

I've gone through a lot of stress in the last year and I'm very meRAB sensitive. Seems I react with heartburt and upper back pain when Some meRAB don't agree with me.Anyway in the middle of Feb. I started to get heart palpitations very bad. At that point I started noticing food or mucus crawling up my throat in the middle of the night. Yes, I had the chest tightness, and had trouble breathing at night so I always put the cieling fan on. Then when I brushed my teeth I had so much yuckie mucus come out. Totally new to me.
I saw an ENT the last week in May and he scoped me and said I had acid reflux. He put me on Nexium which took the mucus and chest problems away pretty quickly. The stinging irritated throat however doesn't get better. I wanted to take double dose of meRAB but was told no. It is a slow process to heal the throat. 8weeks or more. I can't wait. Hope it works because this stinging makes me want to not talk. Also I have slight burning on the roof of my mouth and side of the tungue.:( I chew a lot of gum...it seems to ease the burn.

I'll also mention that I dont think I have 'acid reflux' it was just a single episode where some acid came up and it accidentally burned my throat because usually i can swallow it back down but this time I wanted to burp at the same time and the acid came up.

A single incident of acid reflux is what is commonly referred to as heartburn and is nothing to be too concerned about unless it becomes a common (chronic) occurrence.

If you're still feeling inflammation and mucus you might want to take an over-the-counter medication (PrilosecOTC) every day for a couple of weeks to give the irritation time to heal.

The tightness is the result of acid irritating the sensitive lining to the lungs - it takes a while for the linings to calm down but you should be fine in a few days - again, taking PrilosecOTC may help those irritated areas to heal.

The difficulty breathing is due to the irritation. Acid reflux doesn't typically cause scars unless it is chronic and goes untreated for a long period of time, in which case those irritated areas can become cancerous (but this happens in a tiny percentage of people).

It doesn't cause any permanent damage to the lungs as long as you give them a chance to heal.

Here is my concern.

Firstly this happened on wednesday and I went to the doctor on thursday.

I now have a range of symptoms.
They are shortness of breath, tightness in chest, swollen sore throat (lumpy feeling), and difficulty swallowing and breathing at times. My doctor said the chest was clear and he could see a burn trail in the throat.

Are these normal symptoms? I need to know what is happening to me, I am anxious that some acid may have been aspirated?

Those are definately symptoms of acid reflux.I would take some Prilosec or something similar at least a couple of weeks or more to get it under control. It is frightening. I deal with this alot. You will be fine.

do you think exercise such as running is recommended or best avoided to oxegenate the lungs?

and how do I know whether this acid reflux is recurring? Would i know if I was getting reflux while I'm sleeping? or even during the day?

So just to make sure.. this happened on wednesday. It's now Sunday. Should I expect to give it a few more days for the symptoms to go away? and if they don't, then what does this mean?

I've read about all sorts of nasty things such as aspiration pneumonia and
Acute respiratory distress syndrome.

thanks

Google " Acid Reflux + stress" and it's all over the place.
I stressed about breast cancer which I got last year. Chemo and raRAB can really do a nuraber on the body. They say you don't have to have stress two days ago to have reflux. It can go back two years and reflux can pop up it's ugly head.

You should be a little careful - I wouldn't run until your lungs feel fine.

You'll experience similar symptoms - shortness of breath, mucus or lump in your throat, slight burning in the middle of your chest.

As I said before, I'd recommend that you take something - try taking Zantac for a couple of days and, if that doesn't help, take PrilosecOTC. Your body may need some help to heal from this episode.

/jonathan...My ENT said it would take 6-8 weeks or longer for the throat to heal. After the acid is taken care of in the throat....the throat has a chance to heal. I was a bit of a sceptic but the people on these boarRAB reasured me that it takes a while..darn..Hopefully I won't go crazy itll it happens. Does it sting in the throat when you talk?

but from what I've read about prilosec, it's to stop acid production and to stop it coming up right?

How will it help to heal the burns though?

It does sting a bit but it's a lumpy feeling and I can also hear a change in my voice its become husky. Do you have chest tightness?

Whats your story, what happened to you?

thanks for your reply.

Can you please answer these specific questionas as best you can? :

Why is my chest feeling tight even now? is it acid gone into the lungs? (this happened wednseday)

how long will the 'burn' in the throat take to heal ? and i have read that scars can form leading to restriction. I am worried that this restriction is what's causing the difficulty breathing and breathlessness. What do you think?

similarly will the lungs form scars? I did feel the acid going down the wrong pipe so some may well have entered.

thanks

No trouble swallowing, just the feeling of a raw throat and the stinging when I talk. the tungue touches parts of the throat and that's what i feel. How about you?
