Thank-you but i think i am going to stay clear of that drug as my GI dr said depression and anxiety are common side effects and he doesn't recommend it for me since i have a strong history of both. Thank-you for the suggestion though.

I was wandering how the kefir was doing for you? I thought about getting some kefir grains. I guess it wouldn't hurt.

Question~

Well, western medicine has run out of suggestions for my relentless gerd that DOES NOT respond to ppi's. So, i am really trying mediation, qi gong, lots of kefir, yogurt, etc. Albeit losing OVER 25 lbs now, i'm at 112...i am trying to remain calm. The problem is regurgitation, fullness, bubbles pushing up after every meal, snack and this awful sore spot in my esophagus? or throat, it must be my esophagus becuase ENT dr doesn't see any ulcer in throat. It is achy and sore every day, 24 hours a day. You will probably say go to a dr, i am being watched by 2 drs, one ent and one gi. The GI guy said there is a chance a hole has developed since my endoscopy last July but extremely small. Then what in the world is this awful, achy burning, alternate and repeat sequence feeling on my left side, kinda back of throat but further down. I am trying to remain calm, as stress aggravates reflux....but is it going to start bleeding?

Has anyone had this in their throat/esophagus...please someone say yes b/c i feel so alone with a "broken esophagus" on here and i guess am looking for someone whom has had this or similar situation for lengthy period.

I hate that reflux has such an attitude and is so unpredicatable from person to person.

I know there is not a lot I can say or add other than we are rooting for you and wish you find relief soon. If this is any consolation, I have been told by two physicians that the severity of perceived symptoms (how one feels) does not typically or always match the underlying condition. For whatever reason, people with stomach cancers and Barrett's sometimes do not have symptoms, while others with silent reflux have the worst damage. Therefore, you are suffering a lot, but the underlying condition may not be severe. I know this is little consolation to you right now, but I don't think the pain and discomfort you feel necessarily mean that you will start bleeding. I don't think you have a broken esophagus, but I am sure it feels that way when you are experiencing discomfort and burning so many times per day. It is frustrating that the doctors cannot offer you something to provide you with a break from all this discomfort you are feeling.

I like the kefir but its hard to tell as i am now taking prilosec pm dose every other day now and i don't feel so well. From what i've read its good stuff, i also just started taking align (probiotic supp) 5 days ago.

I sure as heck hope i don't burn an even bigger hole in my esophagus but i have been so sick ON ppi's that i must try the other way. I was so normal before ppi's last June, now my gi system is in hell.

Take care.

Have you tried meteclopramide (Reglan) ?

This has a "prokinetic" effect - that is, it encourages the stomach to empty, and it also tightens the oesophegal sphincter, so that there is less in your stomach to back up, and what there is is less likely to enter oesophegas .

It might be worth a try - its dirt cheap, its safe, and it might be just what you need. I would atleast speak to your doctor, see what s/he thinks?

Hi Marigold:

Came back to read your latest post and check up on you to see how you are getting on.

I have had three pretty decent days. Aside from the passage of time and the possibility that I may finally be getting through the worst of the acid rebound, the only other measure I have taken is to cut down on carbs once I found two or three online papers on the correlation between high carb intake and heartburn.

I decided to try to stay on a low carb diet for a few days to see if it made a difference and I have to say that I have experienced considerable less heartburn and other unplesant gastric symptoms since I cut back on the carbs.

I think probiotics are wonderful, but I was apparently taking in a lot or carbs along with the probiotics through yogurt, Kefir smoothies, etc. I was also eating a lot of rice and potatoes thinking these were bland fooRAB and easier on the stomach. About three days ago, I eliminated all the dairy products, except for almond milk, most of the bread and other heavy starches. Amazingly, I am feeling a lot better since I began to cut down on those carbs. This is not a true experiment since I am still on the Zantac and all the other remedies.

Just wanted to share this with you, though I think you have mentioned that you have tried most remedies already with little relief.

Interesting Rose. I read this in two new books i got about healing digestion naturally (since our bodies will eventually get used to ppi's and stop working not to mention side effects). I was just tested for Celiac's disease and it was a low possibility but my acupuncturist had told me that the test doesn't rule out sensitivities to it.

I really want to try this as i've been thinking about it for at least a week now, its been on my to do list. I just don't want to lose more weight that i don't have. Could you tell me an example of your food in a day? I just rely on carbs so much i don't know what to fill in for that. Funny you mentioned almond milk, i just began drinking that 2 weeks ago instead of milk and i really like it, possibly my body too:) moreso than milk.

I am really happy to hear you are having some good days. I have decided i can't wait to taper off this drugs as i think THEY are what is making me ill. After much research (i just tapered off of two anxiety drugs, so that was my focus for awhile) and the drs running out of ideas.....i am giving this a shot, albeit not an ideal situation shot. It is amazing when i look back. Last June my esophagus became swollen overnight, dr said it was gerd, took prilosec and it was gone within a week. tried to stop 2 weeks later and it came back with avengence. It never really got better, better after that, my body never responded to the ppi the same. And then after the dr upped my ppi to 40 mg a day, i began having horrible gallbladder pains and problems with constant esophagitis every day. Then came the horrible throat infections (which i am finding infections can be common in people on ppi's...harvard medical school says people on ppi's have a 27% chance of catching pneumonia, etc.). HinRABight is 20/20. I have no stones or infection in my gallbladder, this has been ruled out. I have not had an endoscopy since last July as the dr hasn't suggested it yet (but i am sure is getting ready to). I have to be careful of this procedure though now b/c i just came off of the anxiety medicine xanax which they give you benzos to sedate during endoscopy, and i had a rough time coming off that and would like to give my body a break from that awful drug that i was told to take long term for anxiety (when the fda has only approved it for 4 weeks max.).

Anyways, on the days i don't take it i feel less bubbles and regurgiation but my bottome esophagus is very achy and itchy today. I am taking my morning 20 mg every day but my pm dose every other day.

Please let me know of your food ideas, that would be helpful, i think i need to give this low carb thing a shot.
