Accupuncture for back pain - 1st Visit

I am so interested in hearing how this goes for you. I have so wanted to try this, even my last physical therapist suggested it. Sadly being on workers comp, I am unable to do this since they will not approve it and I can not get an unapproved treatment done. But soon as workers comp is out of my life I am going to get this done.

I really wish you the best of luck with this and again I look so forward to hearing about each visit :)

Pepper, I have wanted to try acupuncture too but we don't seem to have any here in town. I would have to go about 60 miles away to Indy but if you get good results I may give it a try. Right now on a break from Prolotherapy and I am feeling pretty good. I hope this works for you. You definitely deserve some relief. Take Care and keep us posted on how things progress! Dee;)
 
Very interesting! The doctor put over 50 needles along my lurabar spine, hip, upper thigh and right foot and left them in for 15 minutes. Some of the needles felt like a pinch going in and many of them I did not feel at all. Throughout the procedure it felt like the pain was almost being syphoned out thru the needle. LOL Taking out the needles did not hurt whatsoever. When I got up, my foot/leg felt nurab. Otherwise, I did not have the normal cramping in my back, just a little pulling. 3 hours after the procedure my normal back cramping appeared.

I think it helped but I think it might be a little to early to know. They told me that I should know in 3 to 4 sessions. Next session she is going to try heating needles. She also told me that I will have longer relief after we have done them a couple of times.

I will keep you posted as I have schedule my 2nd session for Monday morning at 8:00.
 
How much is it costing? Any chance it's covered by insurance? I have a lot of back pain (fusion 15 years ago with pain now showing up nearly daily) and had considered accupuncture but not sure if I can afford it.
 
Some insurance companies are beginning to cover acupuncture, but it still is not common. Some practioners price treatment in a package and some charge by each time you go for treatment. The price depenRAB on where you live in the country and who you go to.

You need to go for awhile before you may notice any change. One or two treatments will not give you much feeling that something is going on....

that's exactly what I experienced with my accupuncture. In the long run it seemed to help me feel slightly relaxed and in turn I guess you could say I had slightly less pain. It did feel good, I enjoyed it. However over time all I got from it was a couple hours (like you) of this relaxed feeling, it did not help me long term at all. Like I said though it was really great for the couple hours after but as far as healing or anything like that, there was no way. However once I had my first surgery things were so crazy in there that nothing non surgical would have fixed me. I think you should absolutely continue to go ahead with more accupuncture and see what happens. Keep me posted. Take care and enjoy!

Hi Pepper, I am sorry that I am just now finding this post. I hope you are finding a good amount of help with this and look forward to hearing about your next visit. I asked my PM Dr. about doing this, during my last months visit. He said he 1st wanted me to have a CT scan, to make sure nothing new is going on, but then he did not see a problem with it. The pain center that I go to, has an accupuncturist on staff and I guess that is the one I would see. My mother in law has been going to accupunture, for hr SI joint, and after the 2nd visit, she was sold on it. So, I am looking forward to giving it a try.

As for those who are on W/C, I was told by my case worker, that as long as your Dr. gives your a referral for it, W/C will pay for it. I don't know if that is a state rule or across the board...but it is worth asking.

Long to no read, lol. I have been away a long time, I missed everyone too. You seem to be the only one I see at first glance. I didn't reaqd thru the entire post but I hope you are still getting something out of the acupuncture.

The first time I went for acupuncture, she put the needles in my back. (It seems everywhere I go, my symptom is listed as low back pain (LBP) when, in fact I never really have much in the way of pain in my back. My pain has always been in my legs. THE CAUSE OF MY PAIN IS IN MY BACK (nerve root compression caused by spondy but now, it appears, just a plain damaged nerve). Immediately following this acupuncture, I had --you got it--LBP caused, it turns out by a kidney infection. (I'm prone to those, by the way and I never know if I've done too much twisting or ? which will give me LBP or if I have a kidney infection. There you go. Anyway, I went back another time. I kind of got into the exoticness of the experience and the little needle boxes with Chinese writing all over them. Oh yes, and that first time, Dr. Wu held my wrist at the pulse point and told me "You have no blood". I didn't disagree with her, just sort of soaking it all in. I went back, maybe a year later (a month ago) and I explained that my pain was in my legs and she put needles in my lower lirabs right along my L5 nerve route. Unlike the first time (the back time) these needles did hurt. As they went in, I felt that nerve pain. you know how it is. Its different from regular pain. I ended up with a week long pain flare. My surgeon thinks one of those needles must have gotten the nerve, but I was not a happy camper. I would be wary if you have nerve pain. Then again, I know people who swear by it. Go figure. I did enjoy the experience though.

Lorie, I used Gainesville Chiropractor and Accupuncture. It is a husband and wife team. Very nice and I like the Saturday hours and early hours during the week. My hubby can take me before work.

It's Leslie!!!!! My husband pushed the wheeled chair up to the puter for 5 min. Had to catch up on everyone!! Glad that this has helped you for a little bit..let's hope for a little longer each time.

Yup...a "big bag" of sweets would be accepted!!!! Candy, candy, candy...it is in the major food groups - right after ice cream!!!

Pepper, I certainly hope that the acupuncture will provide you will some pain relief......more than a couple of hours worth, tho. I'm glad you are giving it a try! I've always been curious about it and how those needles feel going in and being pulled out but apparently it isn't very uncomfortable at all. I've never tried any kind of alternative therapy but then there isn't much like that available in my area.

I thought I would tell you that I got an injection of steroid into the piriformis muscle and that it is working. I've gotten a good deal of relief and am now able to sit for reasonable amounts of time without severe pain. I'm ever so grateful that my ortho listened to me and was willing to take my word for it.

Hi there pepper,

Tried it will I was pregnant as there was little else I could do/take during the pregnancy. I always remeraber coming out of there feeling great, but sadley it didnt last long at all. I kept going twice a week for awhile, then I stopped I really didnt see much benefit. Again the needles didnt hurt. But then we are all individuals and what works for some doesnt work for others. So heres hoping that it will work for you.
