According to Law, at what age someone can have sex in US?

I have to write an essay for my english class about teenage use of birth controls. my sociology prof. said anyone should be 18 years old to have sex according to laws. but as i searched the age of consent, it varies for each state, the average age is 16-17.
does anyone know the right age for having sex in US 'legally'?
 
Are you talking legal to have sex or age of consent? Those are two different issues. What state? In CA it is 18. It is technically unlawful for anyone to have sex under the age of 18. That means two 15 year olds having sex is illegal.

Depends entirely by State.

The unrestricted age of consent varies from 15 to 18, but many States also have "close in age" exceptions for people under the age of consent but close in age.
