Acclaimed director John Boorman to helm CGI-animated Wizard of Oz

I don't remember. I remember the glasses from the first book. So, it was either revealed in that book or I figured it out for myself when I was younger.

I never got around to reading the other books as a kid. I'd like to reread the first one and then try to read a couple of the sequels but, and this may sound kind of silly, but I have way too many other fairy tales to read. :p No, really. When you're an amateur storyteller, books of folk and fairy tales tend to build up on you.
 
You never read the other books? Well, I think it's worth for at least a few things. Like, you'll find out what inspired Princess Leia and the Ewoks. You'll also find out how powerful Glinda really is. She's A LOT more powerful in the other books than in the 1939 movie.
 
Like I said, I want to, but I have way too much other stuff to read right now. I'll get to it eventually. Right now I'm only halfway through The Jack Tales, have a book of Tall Tales from the American West after that, plus a book of Polish folklore and the Victorian Fairy Tale Book. Plus, I haven't even finished this week's stack of comic books. And then there's the reading for school.

I'd like to read more Baum. The guy essentially wrote the first great american fairy tale. I just don't have the time.
 
I wish this new production would follow the character designs created by W.W. Denslow for the original "Wizard of Oz" book. He had a neat style - humorous and whimsical:


There's no doubt his illustrations helped make the first book a hit. I'd love to see them animated, whether in 2D or CGI.
 
Well, like others have said, The classic original was an MGM production made during the Hayes code, so it clearly aimed for the family demographic as well as fit into the mold of the popular broadway musical that was pretty much MGM's trademark of the time. While it's status as an all-time classic will always conjure up memories of the 1938 film, alternate adaptations should be welcome as long as they're trying not to ape that film. Looser film restrictions of today should also allow for more controversial or "darker" content (supposing there was any in the novel).

Since this won't be a musical, this film will rely much more heavily on the scripted material rather than the coreography, vocalizations, and spectacle that made the original so memorable. The fact that this will be CGI animated pretty much eliminates any comparison with the original outside of the source material and the title (which could very well be altered in the future). In fact, that's the one thing that could hurt this film--mediocre CGI animation and artistry.

Being a fan of the Wizard of Oz books (up to Book 5), movie, The Wiz, Wicked (book, currently reading "Son of a Witch", going to see the play in January), Journey Back to Oz, The Wizard of OZ anime series, and Return to Oz I feel I have to give my opinion.

Seriously, this series has been reversioned so many time why not have another go at it? I mean it's not like it's been done three or four times before. It's not like you can't go out and read the original stories. If this movie can give us a more true to book Oz than I say "go for it". I mean look at Journey Back to Oz (animated) and Return to Oz (Disney-live action) they both adapt the Land of Oz/Ozma of Oz stories but Journey sticks close to the Wizard of Oz musical while Return tries to stay closer to the books but both take their liberties (Dorothy DOES NOT almost get shock therapy in the books). So I don't think another interpretation is going to hurt.

Wait, I thought they were arleady doing a live action remake that was going to be based off the original book?

O-Chan, don't forget Tin Man, which was incredible.
