Absolutely Diabolical Lack Of Decent New Movies

Am I the only one who thinks this? I just cannot get excited about Slumdog Millionaire, Watchmen doesn't do anything for me, The Curious Case Of YAWNNNN and all horror films just seem to be so very average.

I actually really enjoy going to the cinema, or watching something less mainstream at home.

Please restore my faith my recommending some exciting, interesting and different new movies.

Completely disagree with you. There's so much good stuff on at the flicks just now, but unfortunately I'm stuck doing uni essays.

I can be difficult to go and see a film after it's been hyped up so much, as you worry that it'll be a disappointment. But I can guarantee that Slumdog and Watchmen are two of the greatest films I've seen in the last few years.

Add to this:

Bolt
Gran Torino
The International
Vicky Christian Barcelona
The Class (won the Palme d'Or at Cannes)

and you really should find something to watch.

The only film I can think of in the last few years that really wow'ed me was The Wrestler. There's been so many films raved about recently that were pretty half-decent at best (The Dark Knight) or even sometimes downright boring (The Curious Case of...Zzz)

I hate to agree but i do!!
There arent even any decent DVRAB out atm tbh.
I wanna get Saw 5 but apart from that all of the thriller/horror/action films look utter crap. B list stars with crap recycled plots.
I know some of the best film in the genre arnt sharp and polished but personally I prefer this, im not a fan of dark and dingy!

I'll give you Gran Torino - that does look very good.

And I don't doubt Slumdog Millionaire is a great film, but I dunno, the more hype a film receives the less interested I am in it.

Then there's:

Anvil! The Story of Anvil
Milk
Frost/Nixon
Three Monkeys (nominated for the Palme d'Or, won Best Director at Cannes)

This whole "it's hyped so I won't go to see it" is all well and good but it doesn't stop people going to see films like New in Town which are universally panned by the critics. Surely if a film's worth seeing the amount of hype is irrelevant.

I think it's been a pretty good couple of months actually. I've no interest in Watchmen though, have we not grown out of supoerhero stuff yet?

Try American Teen if you want something different, that was pretty good.

It's recently been awarRAB season and we've probably had the best crop of films in a very long time. So I don't know how anyone could say the exact opposite.

Milk, The Reader and Frost/Nixon are three of the most interesting films I've seen for ages. And if the press are to be believed Gran Torino and The Wrestler look great too.

Even stuff the reviewers have said is dross like Australia and Valkeri have been passable entertainment imo.

I couldn't agree more, in fact for me that lack of decent movies has been going on for some time now. In fact, I can't remember the last time I simply had to see a film at the cinema, and I love going :D

ive noticed that nearly all the adverts for films now, you cant tell what the films about.
even when you then read the write-up, theres still nothing there, its just all about 'actor so & so from such & such film' with 'producer of...'

There is no lack of decent films, just a lack of films to your taste. I liked TCCBB and Slumdog. Didn't like watchmen or Gran Torino though.

In the next couple of weeks I will be watching Duplicity, knowing, traitor, dragonball and race to witch mountain to name but a few.

I have a unlimited card at the cinema so it's no big deal or financial loss should I not like a film. But I do think there are films for everyones tastes out there.

Frost/Nixon is excellent, one of the best films I've seen in a while. The Wrestler bored me, tbh, and Slumdog was OK. I haven't seen Benjamin Button as it doesn't appeal to me in the slightest.

Has anyone here seen The International, and, if so, is it any good? Watchman looks rather good, too.

I saw The International last week and i thought it was fantastic. It gripped me right from the very start upto the end.

A lot of people are complaining that it's dull and slow and nothing happens. Load of bullsh*t! The reason for that is because you have to concentrate on what's being said and what's happening. Who'd have thought eh?

Yes some rather long worRAB are used and it may be 'wordy' and is full of lots of very different conversations but if you can't be bothered to concentrate for 2 hours and follow the plot then you may as well stick to watching Tom and Jerry cartoons! :D

If you stick with it the end result will pay off and there is fantastic shootout after 90 minutes in which is worth the ticket price alone in my opinion. Watching Watchmen tomorrow!

Taste is subjective, so you are always going to get a 50/50 response to this sort of thread. However, I find that there is a general lack of distribution within UK cinema's, with many excellent world or indie films getting limited or no releases. This is particularly noticed outside of cities where you are limited to multi-screen complexes that favour mainstream blockbusters to rake the cash in, and the majority of these films are average at best.

I was pleasantly surprised to be able to see Che (both parts) at my Empire cinema in Swindon (even if there was only 3 showings over 3 days). I can recommend this.

Erm... That idea is one of the many, many points of Watchmen.

Not seen the film yet, but I have read it and if its faithful to the graphic novel, the idea of masked superheroes and the world's need for them / the beliefs and desires of those who become them, are some of the major themes of the film...

I really enjoyed Frost/Nixon, wasn't that fussed on The Wrestler, and did sit through all of The Curious case of Benjamin Button. Next film I'll go to I think will be Vicky Cristina Barcelona, takes forever for our local cinema to get films sometimes.
Film am looking forward to this year is the new Star Trek film, due out May 8th in the UK I think. Not that big a fan, having seen the trailer for the movie though it looks really good.

Watchmen doesn't seem to interest me though.
