Abraham Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation?

1. because he considered emancipation to be "essential to the preservation of the Union."
2. as a personal moral statement regarding why slaves should be free.
3. as a response to the constant lobbying of abolitionists pressing him to free the slaves.
4. as a way to appease the entire Northern population and their cries for freedom for all slaves.
 
Wow - that's a tough one. I suppose Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation himself - or with help from a few other lawyers.

He did it because the Civil War had gone on a long time - and the death toll was horrendous - and people needed another 'holy cause' to fight for.

The reason for the Civil War officially was to preserve the Union - had not much to do with slaves. But by writing the Emancipation Proclamation, he gave those soldiers another reason to go on fighting.

So... if I had to choose - I'd say #3 and #4 - and if you can only chose one of those, I'd choose #4.
