about my 1994 chevy cavalier?

i was driving a i passed a car the passing gear had a longer than normal rev but when i go to my destination i checked the transmission fluid and it was good i also on my way home when my car would shift it shifted through the gears fine just curious on the long rev while passing a vehicle when i was passing the vechicle the odometer didnt rev up though so i think im ok has this happened to anyone before and if so what should i be looking for
