about midi device and vst ?

hey there guys m really confused that is it necessary that you should have a midi device or midi soundcard to use vst plugins in nuendo 3 or fl studio 9 actually im trying to install virtual guitarist so tell me is it possible without midi device or not cause i have a simple sound card not very hi fi !!!! and if it is possible than please please guide me !!!! ill be very thankful to you !!!
